I've seen at least one tablet computer (like a laptop but with optional keyboard and the ability to "draw" right on the screen) that comes with a Franklin (?) e-planner in which you can write notes, type, and draw. It even has handwriting recognition. So don't assume you can't put drawings into your notes via computer.

Laptops are becoming commonplace--both at the university I'm currently post-docing at and where I did my grad degree. Most have the tables equipped with plugs, better lighting to eliminate screen glare, etc.
However, my laptop is about 8 years old--so you'll never catch me with it in public. ![]() |

They sit in my classes with their notebooks and their remote cable connections. Some of them actually use them to record lecture notes. Most of them read their e-mails. Some of them chat on Yahoo! messenger. Some of them watch last night's basketball highlights at espn.com. One chick, that sat directly in front of me in two classes, spent the entire semester, nearly every entire lecture, playing some annoyingly cute and colorful hybrid of Space Invaders and Tetris. Goddamn distracting. Still others play solitaire. Fucking solitaire.
Why anyone (or their parents) would pay more than 22 thousand dollars a year to do shit like that while there's a nationally respected legal scholar lecturing is completely beyond me. |

Hmmm... I bring a laptop for English, computer classes, and just about everything except math. Math is easier with a TI-83, pen, and paper IMHO.
Most of my classes are computer labs, or mobile computer labs, which every student has a laptop, they grab one when coming in the door. I record lectures with audio software, use Microsoft Word to make flowcharts (hint, the drawing toolbar), type notes into any text processor, follow along with the PowerPoint on the class Web site, email my homework to the professor, download files, and have my onw computer during finals when all the lab computers are on waitlist. What not to do in class: (1) PLAYING GAMES IS RUDE! (2) No need to chat (3) Always turn off all sound (4) There are probally more, but just can't think of them right now. ![]() I go to school here Next semester all my classes are online!!!! No freaking scheduals, attend class in my underware at 3:00am, drinking a beer. ![]() |

I've seen a few people using laptops in class, but I didn't notice them because of any disruption, simply because the lecturer was taking all 48 minutes of lecture to explain the wrong way to solve what a simple scan of the textbook would show to be a sub-5 minute problem.
On the other hand, during winter quarter, I saw three guys passing around a Gameboy and playing Tetris...with the sound ON. |
