I'd just like to point out that "myth" does not mean "completely made up", I'll give two examples of what I mean:

Wyatt Earp really existed, in fact we have his autobiography and photographe to prove it, the Wyatt Earp in "Gunfight at the OK Corral" otoh is complete myth.

The film U571(?) is mythological because the events that it portrays never actually happened as depicted by the film but similar events did occur at different dates and by different people.

The misuse of the word "myth" really pisses me off sometimes, sorry.

Jesus Christ could be completely mythical and yet there could still exist a person or people upon whom the stories are based so when I call myself a "Jesus Myther" I am saying exactly that, i.e the Gospels are not depicting actual events but instead are mythologised accounts of other events that did occur, just like the film U571.

Peter raising someone from the dead in Acts.
Have you noticed this pattern.

Moses lots of miracles.
Joshua some miracles. (Sun and moon stood still)
After that no more miracles.

Jesus lots of miracles.
His disciples some miracles.
After that Christian don't seem to be able to make miracles.

Yes, I've noticed the similarities between Moses and Jesus.
Somewhere else on the board I saw a book advertised that talks about other ancient beliefs and how their gods/goddesses are very similar to the Judaic/Christian beliefs about their god.

Harking back to the 500 people (sorry!), Elvis has already been mentioned. Not only are there probably over 500 people who have "seen" Elvis since he died, there are probably over 500 people who have "seen" Jim Morrison since he died, and I'm willing to bet there are more than 500 who are quite sure they've been abducted by aliens. (For some baffling reason, aliens particularly like to abduct and attempt to breed with ugly, stupid losers.) Claiming to have seen Jesus was probably all the rage at the time, in fact people probably didn't want to admit they hadn't.

Is anyone else having a Monty Python flashback?

Paul: So, uh, I understand you blokes saw Jesus, eh? 500 of you?

Anonymous Brother #1: Um...yeah...right you are. We saw Jesus.

Anonymous Brother #2: Clear as bloody day 'e was.

Paul: There's only you two here.

AB1: Well, yeah, now, but there was 500 of us at least.

AB2: There bloody well was. Maybe more than 500.

Paul: Well where is everyone now?

AB1: Uh...not here?

AB2: Right. They had to go home for dinner. But they was 'ere all right and we all saw Jesus. No question about that.

Paul: Alright, then, I'll include that in my letter to the Galatians. What are your names?

AB1: Uh...our names? Yeah...uh...my name is...Caesar. Caesar Augustus.

AB2: Right. My name is Shirley. Shirley Codswallop.

Paul: Perhaps I'll leave that bit out then.

I have another one:
Paul: (his pen poised over some papyri) - peers at the galileans huddling at the dark corner "did any of you see our Lord Jesus?"

(silence)

Paul: I dont mean see him physically - just like a vision - like the one I had - dont tell me you are all some nuthead heathens"

(A withered hand is raised. Pauls eyes clamp at the hand then gaze directly at the man - his eyes narrowing...)

Paul: You had a vision? You had a vision like me?
(the poor man cringes at the booming voice)

Paul: How do we know you had a real vision? where was this? Were you smoking some weed...?

"at the Galilean market..."

Paul: (furious and incredulous) "and you saw him alone?"

"uh, there were others..."

Paul: (snaps) "how many"? (he asks and fixes him with a stern stare)

"uh, five hundred"

Paul: five hundred? Jesus! What in Gods holy name were five hundred people doing at the market at the same time?

"uh, they came to see the Lord"

Paul: (thinks) "Uh, okay, so five hindred of you saw the Lord?"..."is that right?" ...(scribbles furiously), okay, so the Lord appeared to five hundred of you?"

(they all nod)

Paul: Okay, let me inform the Galatians of this. I am glad you did not tell anyone else but me. Now go but dont tell anyone about this okay?
