Might I suggest iris germanica (that's the tall bearded iris), variety "Aztec Warrior"?

It's deep burgundyish red, very striking to view and definitely "seething"...

P.S. - Reds are exceedingly difficult colors to obtain in iris, which makes anything which approaches red in the species fairly rare.

Of course... Lily season is to be upon us soon...

The oriental lily, variety "Stargazer" would be fittingly "seething" as well.

Just don't go for the diabolical "Voodoo Lily"....

Pescifish, for you I really wanted to do a sea-anemone --- I actually have some excellent photos of sea-anemones (and giant sea-clams with their mantles extruded), but however much they look like flowers, they ain't, and they contravene my self-appointed rule of only showing what I myself have raised from bottom upwards.

Therefore, Pescifish, you get as consolation but worthwhile in their own right
one of my favourite daffodils
as well as a
another small tulip all to yourself, though I hope to hell I haven't made a mistake here of confusing a crocus with a tulip.

Yep... You got it right. The associated leaf structure says it's a tulip.

Hail and well-met !

I am open to all suggestions --- in fact I'm grateful for being alerted to new plants.

I have some lilies growing, but they haven't bloomed as yet.
I like irises. When I was travelling around Japan, I made a point even then of stopping in at the temples that go in for horticulture.

I have some great giant alliums --- purple-headed Globemaster ssp., 1 metres tall, that are making the neighbours really really jealous at the moment.

Yeah... Those giant alliums are kewl. I don't have that kind of room, so I stick to the same show in a much smaller format: chives. Heh...my blooms, which look just like the giant alliums, are about 3/4" across and stand about 5" high.

My lilies are due in about a month. I'm right in the midst of my iris bloom. The early bloomers are starting to blow and the late bloomers have yet to open. Local growers are now starting to recommend interplanting oriental or asian lilies with the tall bearded iris...it seems to work reasonably well until it comes time to thin the iris, then the lilies get in the way.

I tried looking for a picture of "Aztec Warrior" but couldn't find it on either Cooley's Iris webpage, nor on Schriener's Garden Iris webpage. I did find this, though:

A page from Schreiner's catalog

Check out variety "Play With Fire".... Now that's what I'm writing about. It sounds like it might fit Ju'iblex better, anyhoo....

Damn... I've got such a jones for iris. I wish I had a couple of acres to grow just iris, delphinium and roses....

Instead, I'm stuck with my substandard city lot (where I come from, a 50' X 100' lot is standard, mine is only 47.3' wide), minus the footprint of the house, of course. <deep sigh>

I envy you your garden space. What is the total size of your working garden space?

Best,

godfry

And persistant and invasive.... Small, maybe, but definitely not "shy".

I will be putting up more flowers soon, for mouse and others.

I'll comment on online plant shops too, later.
