Arcanum is an rpg with much potential. Now that the company has the world figured out, I hope they can spend more time on the next installment improving the engine and experience.

Addendum: Looks like the company has been roped into doing D&D too.

Unhappy re. Arcanum

Rufus: As a regular at the official Arcanum message board, I can tell you that, sadly, the odds of an Arcanum 2 are slim.

You see, when the game was ready to go, the dumbasses at Sierra (or more specifically Vivendi) decided to hold off on releasing the game until the French and German translations were ready (Vivendi being a French company).

So while the translations were being worked on, an earlier build of the game was leaked and made the rounds of the various warez sites. (Hell, I still remember some idiots coming to the board, asking for help with the game - while the rest of us were still waiting for it to be released! ). Consequently sales were low and both Sierra and Troika lost money.

There's still hope. The message board still sees a reasonable amount of traffic, with a thin trickle of newbies. So people are still playing and buying the game. I'm pretty sure people still make mods. There's even talk of getting a petition going.

Still, it pisses me off no end to think that if the stupid fuckers at Vivendi had allowed the game to be released when it was ready, we'd probably be playing Arcanum 2 right now.

Sources?

I would be a very happy camper to find these rumors true.

Fallout 1/2 were arguably the best single player CRPG's ever.

If three incorporates modability and multi-play, I'll never see daylight again.

We do not discuss Fallout:Tactics in mixed company.

Sources are the Black Isle message boards.

Multi-play or modability don't interest me. I don't care if it's there because I won't use it. Just as long as the single player game isn't adversly effected by it.

Tactics was decent until the robots came out to play. The game went from challenging to impossible in one mission. The death animations just weren't the same without flesh and blood.

The premise behind Arcanum was cool. The gameplay wasn't

Hopes are high that Troika can pull off "The Temple of Elemental Evil." Oooooooooo....(shudder).

Black Isles' Lionheart looks promising as well.

Multiplay, I could care less about. But modability is a must. A game that allows for good modding essentially allows users to shape the game they wanted in the first place - adding an LOTR adventure to NWN, or giving the game sub-races, for example.

I'm really pulling for that too. I wish there was a good Star Trek game out. Almost everything with the ST name on it sucks.

IIRC, it's under "Ustilagor" which is the larval form for it. IIRC, it's about 2000 xp in 2ed.
