An 'association' is how windows connects a line between a file extention and an application. For example: all files that end in .DOC should be opened by MS Word.
You can get to google inside the browser because you already have an application: the browser. What it sounds like is that the association between .url and your browser is missing or broken. Try Control Panel->Folder Options->File Types, look for .url, and make sure it isn't pointing to some non-existant application. Take a look at your other Win2K boxes to see what they have set for it, and duplicate it. Now a piece of advice: forget the desktop icon and the Favorites menu, IE has a nice toolbar at the top of the window called "Links", which is designed to hold your most used urls. I always make sure google is the first one on that list. |

Why not make google your home page? The internet shortcut works fine for me. Make sure you include the whole thing.
http://www.google.ca It'll even give you a drop down list and the default name is "new internet shortcut" |

It's not just google. It's all websites. I give up. I'm going to up grade that computer anyway. Maybe a new mobo and processor will do it. But I sure would like to know the answer.
