Oh I agree with your disagree, in fact nothing bores me more musically than perfect pitch & tone. Hendrix is an appalling singer but I find his sincerity very evokative. OTOH I find Dylan's deadpan grates on me. Personally I describe my musical taste as "angst ridden". I die whenever I hear Janis Joplin.

Gah. I hate Dylan. Possibly because I've heard many of the other musicians he's stolen from over the years. Though hearing Martin Carthy sing these days is pretty painful as well. He's pretty much blown out his voice now.

I still simply don't understand why Dylan was so popular. Then again, I fail to understand most pop music. Though my partner and I had the waitress in stitches last week when we started whining along with Kurt Kobain. "I'm such a loser, I'm a big whiner, I have no life, I'm such a whiiiiner...sucks to me, sucks to be me, me me me me" etc.

Good pitch and clarity doesn't mean you have to have no soul. And bad singing is certainly no substitute for soul.

Ahhh, yes... the TERRIBLE lyrics of Bill Leeb. FLA aren't the only violators here, though... a big chunk of industrial music has the same problem. (See Project Pitchfork, Razed In Black, Wumpscut, etc...)

I"ve gotta second LaFlavor. I'd be huge Smahing pumpkins fan if Billy would sing. He whines and screeches and rasps. Damn it! They're such a good band otherwise!

Um... anything and EVERYTHING by Leonard Cohen?

One of the best songwriters I've ever encountered, but the man can't sing to save his life.

I like it when he whines.

I do think he sounds much more polished on Zwan, though.

It helps to turn your PM 'on' when asking for favours.

All of my favorite singers are people with wierd odd voices, such as

Frank Black of the Pixies
Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys fame
Issac Brooks of Modest Mouse fame
Doc Dart of Crucifucks fame
Beth Gibbons of Portishead fame (she can get weird)
Jerome's Dream guy
Reversal of Man guy
City of Caterpiller guy
Blood Brothers sassy dudes
Neurosis guy

My favorite emcees are Aesop Rock and Does One (at least voice-wise)

the closest thing to a "great" singer I really enjoy is Thom Yorke (radiohead).

I forget the point of this post.....
