Default Newbie cell phone question(s)

Well, I have recently been forced to embrace yet another bit of trendy technology... First it was a PDA, now a cell phone... *grumble*

Anyway, my parents got me a cell phone as a gift. While the service plan is okay, and the convenience is winning me over, I can't stand the phone that came with the plan. It's a Kyocera 2135. The features and sound are okay, but it heats up during use, to the point that after about 10 minutes it's uncomfortable to hold to the ear. I understand from poking around a bit that this is a known problem with the model. So I'm asking for advice and info on purchasing a new one.

Unfortunately I know next to nothing about cell phones, and most of what I do know I've picked up in the last two weeks or so. I know it's pretty subjective, but what should I be looking for? Are there compatibility issues between units and service providers? Is it possible to get a decent deal outside of a service package? Are features like contact lists and speed dial universal, or something special that I'll need to keep an eye out for? (I'm not particularly interested in the built-in PDAs and digital cameras that I've seen ads for, if that helps...)

Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions!

My advice is to chuck it into the nearest garbage can and relish your newly rediscovered freedom.

Did you buy this phone from an Israeli secret service agent?

Simple solution: talk less.

This is a problem with several cell phones. Small devices can't get rid of heat very well, (small mass/limited ventilation and cooling) so it does warm up. I've used audiovox phones that do it as well. It's also a problem with most laptops. (Same issue.)

This is by FAR the best advice I could give you as well. Put that damned thing down.

Every one of the small phones I've had heats up in time. The required power levels are simply beyond what can be dissipated without heating up.

Well, mine has a contact list system that you can dial from but that's it--no speed dial per se.

I have the same brand of phone, different model.

I've never had it get too hot, but then I'm on a pay by the minute plan so I don't think I've ever talked more than 4 minutes. I try not to go over 60 seconds if possible (so what if I can't follow what my kid is saying, time's up, bye!)

I like the speed dial function, though I only use it to call home. Helps get the call done on one red light.
