Dean won't scrap NAFTA and other "free trade" agreements that allow for millions of jobs to be sent overseas. That is where the good jobs from the 90s are going. But don't worry, we still have Wal Mart...

So, to get the ball rolling on the Tuesday morning (it's about 8:45 AM on the East Coast of North America, here in New York, about one mile from Ground Zero), we have the Great White Hope of the Center, Howard Dean, trying to supplant the evil Ogre of the Bush and his Tribe.

Seriously:

1. Will Dean compromise his already mediocre postions to get nominated?

2. Will Dean get nominated in spite of his compromises?

3. If not Dean, who. (Lieberman?)

So many questions on a hot morning in July.

If Dean gets any closer to the left he's going to scare off mainstream America.

Another area where Dean is distinguishable from Bush. Dean would advise the WTO to enforce stricter environmental and labor standards on foreign countries that trade with the US. He is for fair trade, not free trade. Compare to Bush's solution of allowing wages in this country to sink so that they compete with wages in countries like India.

Not only is Bush not doing anything about nafta, but his Free Trade Area of the Americas agreement will only exacerbate the problem. Dean would not allow this.

LOL, "advise", well he sure sounds like a hero.

Well that is a clever campaign slogan. How does he plan to make trade "fair"?

Yeah, Dean would "advise" everyone to "play fairly". It wouldn't change a damn thing.

I strongly advise that you read my posting on the Left on this thread. Once again, it is only by the wildest stretch of a conservative imagination that Dean can be called a person of the Left.

I should know. I've been there for 45 years.

I understand what his platform has been in the past. Totally. The fact is that what he's selling now isn't consistant with his history. Kerry and Kucinich are doing the same thing. I could elaborate but it would take this thread off topic.

As a Conservative I see Leiberman as the only remotely serious threat to Bush. I want Dean or Kucinich to win the vote though, so there is no risk.

Then please start another thread. I am interested in your understanding of how Dean's prior history was considerably more "left", then what is currently being portrayed.

Fair enough. Whatever. Let's say, then, that if Dean goes any more TOWARDS the left, he won't be electable, even running against Bush's far-right record.

Even by your singular definition (left is where I stand, and nowhere else), if you stand Dean and Bush side by side, one is a whole lot closer to the left than the other.
