Default computer, and the operator that cant..

fix it.

The Issue

When I play music, through any app, i get digital feedback (for lack of a better term). The only way I can remedy this is if I drop the app to the startbar, then double click the icon and hold the left mouse button down. Once I release the left mouse button, the 'feedback' returns. My OS is Windows ME. Anything I can do to remedy this? One day it worked fine, the next, it doesnt. I have changed soundcards (which didnt work). The only thing I can think of is that I installed and played Anarchy Online. But, how could a game setting cause this?

www.jamd-linux.com

or if you decide you dont have the balls to ditch windoze, try turning your microphone volume to zero. i dont know what you mean by "feedback"...you mean it sounds strange? i dont know how to get to the audio thing, been so long since i used windows, but its probably in the control center under audio.

ok, feedback is the wrong word. How about digital static. Or, in other words, a very obnoxious noise that overrides the beautiful sounds of mozart's fantasia.

Also, I have wanted to install Linux but cant decide on the best one. I mean why so many, other than software bundles? Perhaps I dont know enough about the os to make an informed decision.

Yep folks - for a user that's having trouble operating WindowsME, Linux is the answer.

PG, I would suggest re-installing your audio drivers as a first step. Remember WindowsME also has System Restore - do you remember the last date when the sound was functioning perfectly? Check your System Restore calendar for restore points around that period.

The reason is, quite simply, choice. Microsoft doesn't give you a choice; you just buy one of their setups and run with it. LINUX is different.

For starters, Windows only runs on x86 machines... Microsoft experimented briefly with Sparc and MIPS(I think) ports of Windows, but they weren't wildly successful and were dropped. (Partly, anyway. They kinda live on as Windows CE ). Linux, on the other hand, can run under Alpha, x86, Sparc, Acorn, MIPS, PowerPC, SGI, UltraSparc, and more.

Second, the LINUX operating system is highly configurable. It can be configured to run under anything from a 16-processor mainframe to a wristwatch(Really! twas a proof-of-principle project of IBM's). This configuration is in the form of hundreds of options when compiling the kernel; things like multiple-processor support, SCSI and IDE drivers, support for HUGE amounts of memory i.e. multiple gigabytes, etc etc etc.

Lastly, the different distributions come with different 'helper' applications. The user-friendlier distributions, like Mandrake, for instance, come with intelligent installers for getting all your hardware detected and working for you, and a plush GUI interface for configuring your system and installation of programs and patches and stuff. So does RedHat. If, on the other hand, you're a minimalist and a LINUX expert, you can get Debian or Gentoo and get PRECISELY what you want installed and configured the way you want it, no more no less. Add to that the huge selection of open-source software available for LINUX and you've got a gigantic selection of choices of choices of choices...

If you're really interested in LINUX, I'd suggest trying Mandrake to get a grip on what it's all about... it'll set up without bother a running system with a big selection of useful software installed - web browsers, email clients, graphic editing, video playing, CD burning, audio playing, chat, etc. all under a nice GUI interface.

Or you could get a Knoppix CD; it's a LINUX distribution that runs purely from CDROM. Perfect for giving LINUX a test-drive without having to install anything at all on your system.

I have tried to reinstall the audio drivers. No luck

Thanks for the mandrake advice. I will download it and give it a whirl. Is there a linux fordummies type website?

Meh. Linux is probably not going to bail you out of this one.

When you installed that game...did it install anything like directX or some other such add on?
