Quote:
if not knowing is due to ignorance, then knowledge is not there to begin with and hence no lie. on the other hand, since one must know the truth first in order to construct a lie that is contrary to the truth, therefore lying to oneself is a contradiction.
bear in mind that knowledge is sometimes false. My friend believes that the damage from smoking can be repaired, due to the knowledge that the damage goes away in two years according to some source of science. Therefor, our reasons for continuing with a behaviour, are based on shaky ground. Really, a lot of knowledge is basically a leap of faith, and our beliefs are based on those we trust the most. myra hindley, the british child killer followed her lover ian brady all the way to prison for his ideology. More often than not, we take the easy way out and use reason to justify our actions, even when the reality is never knowing whether we are living better or worse lives. If we feel discomfort then reason is the starting point, belief is the reinforcer, and knowledge (?).

We can only be the wiser by acting, and finding out, as I posited, when we throw 'caution to the wind' and expose ourselves to the elements. I think that all thinks have equal value, in that they are worthless, but that allows us to be objective in our struggles. If you believe me, does that mean that you trust me, or that it makes sense?

As with many ideas, this is ambiguous, so I don't really know where to take it. The more specific I become, the more meaningful it becomes to me, but does that make it any more meaningful to you? This is where source and destination comes in- are you searching for the holy grail, or wondering whether or no to eat bacon?

Sorry took me awile to reply. I like philosophy, but it makes me feel stupid. Tani, if I understood your post, i like it. And it is a good point. Maybe more of you could elaborate on that so I can make sure I'm getting it. Paraphrasing my understanding mapping one's mind means deciding then closing one's mind to other knowledge? deep and good concept.

Mr Sammi, empirically, using induction, deduction, logic all of those. Extrapolation gets shaky. There's a better phrase for the logic part, but I can't recall. Hopefully you get the idea. Unfortunately balance point can be desiced to soon (and is based upon decision). Then new info can upset the balance. Luckily all of us here are open to that, right? hehe.

A good illustration of Tani's point (about knowing you know) was a great Star Trek NExt Gen episode where a newly discovered species only communicated thru reference to historical situations (analogy). To understand them you had to know of the experience they were referring to. fascinating
