37%, including federal and California state income taxes, Medicare and Social Security.

When you add in sales and gas taxes, etc., and hidden taxes like FICA (paid by the employer), the total tax burden has got to be over 40% of my gross income.

It's not just the amount taken from us. It's how it's pissed away that bothers us as well.

Yeh, if I thought it would be spent sanely and wisely, I'd gladly pay much more than I do now. As it is, I begrudge every dollar because I KNOW it's going to be spent on something stupid.

We didn't begrudge our taxes, seeing as how our incomes come directly from the state or federal government. Rufus and I feel that, in this respect, taxpayer's money is being well spent.

I think it would be great if taxpayers could decide where their own money could be spent. They could be given choices like the following, and then they could decide what percentage of their tax money would go to the different programs:

Welfare
Food Stamps
Defense
Congress and Senate Salaries and Benefits
Infrastucture (Roads and Highways)
Farm Aid
Disaster Relief
Centers for Disease Control
Foreign Aid
Education
National Parks
EPA
Commerce Department
FDA
FCC
OSHA
Etc.

If we had these options, needless pork barrel spending would be gone very quickly.

Totaling Federal and State income taxes and local property tax, it came to 42% this year. However, that is higher than normal due to some unusual circumstances that I hope will NEVER be repeated!

Wow. We'd be trading pork for bread and circuses. Hardly much of an improvement.
