Why is he in a video singing a cover song from Nine Inch Nails?
I heard him on the radio a couple of weeks ago singing some 80's song. What is the deal with this guy? |

I really like Johnny Cash. The guy's been crazy forever. Frankly, it's a testament to the durability of the human body that he's still upright.
Seeing country music go from the Cash classic "Cocaine Blues" to Shania Twain's "I feel like a woman" is just so horrific. Recently my wife has been listening to country... But one must endure. |

What's the famous live concert he did in the jail?
I heard it a couple of times and it made the hairs on the back of my neck tingle. There was just something about it. |

Maybe Cash is interested in doing good music, no matter where the source, and not having the Nashville stamp of pop approval like the majority of country music "artists" these days?

Actually both songs are from his latest album. It's really quite good.

He's been covering rock & roll songs for a while. Social Distortion covered his "Ring of Fire" back in the early 90s (I think), and he responded by singing Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage" (his version is much better than the original IMHO). I think the album with "Hurt" also has a Cash version of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus". I don't know if he genuinely likes the songs or if his manager is trying to get him to be hip, but Johnny Cash covering Nine Inch Nails is much, much better than that sanitized pap they call country music these days.

He also did a pretty cool collaboration with U2 on their Zooropa album.

Earlier in his life Cash had been arrested for several different felonious activities and actually did a brief stint in Folsom. |

His cover of Nick Cave's 'The Mercy Seat' is also very good. I think it's better than the original.
