There was a perceptive contribution to Margo Kingston's Web Diary that argued why Howard has continuing support.
The link is http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/...430270313.html and the contributor was Daniel Moye. Also, in reading "Dark Victory", an account of the Tampa affair and aftermath, there was a comment along the lines of Howard has made people relaxed and comfortable at the expense of their conscience. A lot of people simply concentrate of surviving work (where which unemployment could happen anytime these days) and paying off their mortage (which for a lot, an interest rate rise will create significant hardship). Howard tells them what they want to hear. Nevermind that when it is convenient Howard will screw the battlers. Also, the public expects politicians to lie. Most are so used to pollies telling porky pies that they don't care. Yeah we know that we have been lied to but so what? Passive acceptance wins and nothing changes. |

Thanks for that link Xeluan, depressing as it was.
And what is his agenda? In my view he wants to smash the "social contract" in Australia to smithereens. He wants to establish Australia as a US style democracy where people fend for themselves and save for their needs, including health and education. He also wants the US model of a corporatist state run by government in partnership with big business, where politicians and businesspeople swap roles routinely and big business finances the conservative party. And he wants Australia to divorce itself from the multilateral system of international relations AND become part of the American world. Margot Kingston It would be hard to disagree with that. John Howard is Mr. 30%...he is concerned with looking after the 30% of Australians who send their children to private schools, have private health insurance, can afford university fees, have cosy negative-geared property investments and own four-wheel drives. That is his orbit. The rest of us are *losers*, not battlers anymore. This new philosophy can be clearly read in Alan Dallings[whoever he is] contribution from the same link: You are a joke. Your ideas are a joke. Your supporters are a joke. Know why? You and they have benefited from a society that has been writing cheques that it has no hope of cashing. Good to see that we have a government who has said 'Enough is enough' and be buggered supporting people in our society who are too thick to do the right thing by themselves, their family and society. Show me a socialist and I will show you a mediocre non-achiever. You people are pathetic. Get off your arse and have a go. Bludging arseholes. So much for our egalitarian tradition...if only Dalling was Howards speechwriter. Daniel Moyles battlers might get the message then. |
