Why is it that all the atheists here are saying they're grown less tolerent? I had always got the impression that the moral relativism you guys generally profess parades Tolerance as the greatest of all virtues? I'm sure I've seen numerous arguments that religion was evil because it was authoritarian and intolerant.
So what's up? Isn't becoming intolerent of others exactly what you're arguing against? What gives?

As for me, the mixing I've done here with so many others of different beliefs has made me far more tolerant.

who are you calling a moral relativist? I'm certainly not one. It seems to me that the people who claim that their deity is the source of morality are the true moral relativists. They seem to have one outstanding moral rule "might makes right."

I am quite certain that you will disagree with me Tercel and I recommend you take you disagreement to moral foundations. I won't respond but many others will.

"All the atheists"? I am an atheist. Where did I say that I have become less tolerant?

What are you talking about? Sounds like you've been listening to Rush Limbaugh.

Please give a link to these "numerous arguments."

The problem here may be that you are confusing tolerance for individual freedom with tolerance for unsupported ideas. I try to practice a great deal of tolerance for all people, regardless of beliefs. Surely you don't think that such tolerance means we should go easy on people with absurd beliefs?

My motto:
Hate the Christianity, but love the Christian. We love you Tercel and tolerate you, but we have no love and little tolerance for your myths.

Tolerance is not the "greatest of all virtues". It is a good rule for getting along in a democratic society, and usually is evidence of a mature frame of mind. But we generally don't tolerate people who want to do us harm.

I had a more favorable impression of Christians before seeing so many in action. I thought that Christianity was a relatively harmless cult, except for the Religious Right (who, I assumed, were actually fascists misusing religion.) But now I know that there is a real downside to warping your mind with Christian beliefs, especially if you have to persuade yourself that those beliefs are actually rational.

Stumbling upon this site for a school project (yes, I am the "Jonny gets a paper to write" case study) I was a very liberal Roman Catholic (oxymoron?) who would have, outside of this site's influence, likely moved into a nondenominational form of theism due to diagreements with the Church's general doctrine. Thanks to a few months lurking here, I switched my extremely analytical mind to my religious beliefs, and, after a brief period in which I'd have classified myself as an agnostic, I became an atheist. I've grown in knowledge, tolerance, and perhaps even respect towards others. Or, at least, I'd like to hope so ;-).

Tsk tsk tsk, Tercel, it would be nice if you actually replied concretely, say to my own little post above, rather than simply trolling, as you appear to be doing.

Tsk tsk tsk, I personally don't tolerate neo-Nazis, nihilists or rhubarb.

So the big what ?

BTW, who said I was a relativist ?

I have friends who are theists, I have friends who are atheists, neo-pagans and simple-don't-know's.

Dearie me, I think you're far more interested in trying to troll here rather than dealing with us as individual people ?
Am I being unfair ?

Oh golly gosh, may I ask if you're tolerant of Ku Klux Klan members, Thuggees, Jim Jones recreationists, neo-Nazis, neo-Stalinists, Serbian ultranationalists, and the like ?

What's your beef, Tercel ?
