Default Howard Deans first big test

Howard Dean's son involved in burglary

I believe this will the story that either makes or breaks this run for the presidency.

Somehow the children of political canadidates always seem to screw up when all the lights are focused on their parents. Usually strings are pulled behind the scenes to insure that the kids get off and the press usally gives them a pass. I doubt that if this were to occour in this case that the press would be so kind to Dean. The press has been waiting for a major slip up from either Dean, Kerrey or Lieberman and I am sure they can smell blood in the water.

If Dean can handle this well it could very well vault him into the lead.

On another note, did anyone see his campaign add that ran on The Daily Show last night? It was terrible. The worst part of all was at the end he said "thats why I approved these statements". What the hell does that mean?

The campaign finance reform bill passed last year requires candidates to appear in the ad and state their approval of the message communicated. He statement was for compliance with that law.

If the Bush girls can be lushes, and Chelsea can be bland, then Dean's son can be an accessory to a felony.

I'm willing to wager that the right-wing will be all over it.

Wayward children of politicians is mainly a minus for moralizers. "Where does he get off telling me how to raise my kids if he can't take care of his own?" Democrats are by-and-large insulated since, heck, if he'll let queers get married, of course his boy's screwed up.

Caveat: the Bush/Rove team has now abolished all shame, and therefore the otherwise outrageous behavior of the Bush Twins and Noelle attracts only token attention.

Are you serious? I don't recall reading about that. There has got to be a better way of saying it perhaps a voice over at the end where it says paid for by they could ad approved by as well. It just sounded like he didn't actually come up with his position he just approved of it.

Like me I assume that most other Americans were unaware of this tidbit in the law and will be equally perplexed by this line in the ad.

I think most people understand that teenagers will do stupid things. Dean's kid was driving a car while his friends tried to steal liquor from a country club. So far Dean has been upfront and responsible about it, so I don't think it will hurt him at all.

Now if his son was arrested for the satanic murder of Laci Peterson... that might be a different matter.

I think Dean's kid's screw-up will be chalked up as an "indiscretion of youth". A 17-year old swiping some booze, while certainly wrong, is not that serious. Many 16-20 year olds do illegal things to obtain booze. Unless Dean really screws something up, I don't think it will have any effect on this campaign.

This Monday, June 23, Dean makes his formal announcement of his candidacy for President. Rallies are scheduled throughout the US. This should get Dean a lot of PR. I do agree that the commercial shown on The Daily Show last night was unimpressive. The campaign needs to get some media savvy people.

THOUGHTfully Yours,
Clark
