marjoe gortner is the perfect example of what speaking in tongues is all about.

I was raised in a church that spoke in tongues all the time.
My mom says that when I was two, she had went up to an altar call and she carried me with her. Some man started speaking in tongues. I looked at him, repeated his nonsense syllables (to the best of my two-year-old ability) and started laughing. She had to run out of the sanctuary to get me to stop. Imagine, at two, I was making fun of these kooks! But then years of indoctrination pass and I'm convinced that it's real. I did it a few times, but not like everyone else. Everyone else at the church could speak in tongues on command. For instance, the pastor would ask them to "pray in the spirit" and they could. I wanted to be sure that it was gawd and not me. Looking back, I think it was psychosomatic. Every single time before I spoke in tongues, my chin would quiver. Sometimes my chin quivered without the speaking in tongues following. Then, after I had become a heathen , I was watching Leap of Faith with Steve Martin. And during one of the "services" in the movie, my chin started quivering. NOW TELL ME THAT'S NOT PSYCHOLOGICAL!! I started laughing. For sooo long I had interpreted the quivering chin as gawd trying to use me to speak in tongues and here I am, an atheist and he's still trying to use me! LOL Methinks the chin quiver is a product of classical conditioning. |

One night back in 1991 while being filled with the spirit of Jim Beam, it was reported that I spoke in tongues. In fact, the "spirit" move me to do some very odd things, the least of which included stealing a condom machine from the bar and placing it in front of our RA's dorm room. (we did return it btw)
