GeoTheo,

Thank you for your concern. What I would like is for Christians to realize that theirs is not the only interpretation of reality. To accept that not everyone must agree with them or even respect their point of view and to have the good sense to realize that there is more than enough religious opportunities in this country without bringing it into the public schools or government. If that would come about it would make me feel much better.

I would like to point out that Atheist_In _Foxhole
made me laugh. Now that I am laughing Heathen Dawn is making me laugh. She wants to "Stamp out" Christianity because we are "Evil Dualists" perhaps I just take you people too seriously. One thing you have going for you all is that you get in a lot of deep discussions. Most people don't. I will give you that.

Question

"Starboy:... Christians want to take over the government, the schools and the courts."
GV: The power hungry Arabs, Hindus, Tamils, Irish, etc all want to take over their own country. Most people are sheep not shepards. Only the power hungry Xians want to take over.

"They want to pass laws to legislate their beliefs onto the rest of the population."
GV: QV The Federalist re factions and why the US has checks and balances.

"They will not rest until the entire planet is Christian."
GV: Don't worry, they won't live that long.

"When you think about it, the parallels to the Nazis and Red Communists is frightening."
GV: When did the Nazis and Reds say they would not rest until the entire planet is Xian ????

EDIT to distinguish Starboy's quotes from my replies.

GV,

Where were these moderate, tolerant Christians when the word god was plastered onto our money and placed in the pledge? Where are these moderate and tolerant Christians when it comes to keeping prayer and creationism out of the schools? When the athiests marched in washington where were the Christians that supported their right to be heard and respected in this society. It would have sent a strong message about Chrsitianity if rather then picketting against the atheist they were marching side by side with them. The lack of Christian dissent against Christian extreemism is tacit approval. Christians, hang your heads in SHAME!

Yes, I've noticed how ID creationists don't chime in against their biblical-literalist YEC friends in creation-evolution debates, but they're yelling at the evolution supporters about naturalistic worldviews. I asked one of them why he wasn't arguing with his YEC pals about the six-day creation and the young Earth and he said that those matters weren't central to salvation so there was no need. He even kept quiet when the YECs were banging on about "if the earth is old and evolution happened, then it means that Jesus didn't die for our sins!" Which strikes me as pretty central to salvation - yet not a peep out of him. That, to me, is tacit encouragement of the extremist position by someone who says that he opposes it.

Ditto.....have I told you how much I adore you dear?

Now the question was "So, why should atheists respect the beliefs of xians?"

I don't respect their beliefs. As others have said I respect their right to belive whatever the hell they want to. A xian will not respect my belief not to belive. That's fine. All they have to do is tolerate it and not treat me like crap for not beliveing. That's hard for many to do since their religion tells them to preach and show me the light otherwise I'm evil and going to hell.

If however, a person I like and form a friendship with happens to be xian and later tries to convert me or their beliefs effect someone else in a negative manner I am sure to lose respect for that person. Does that mean I will not respect them for supporting their family or doing good deeds? No, but if they say their sick child can't go to a doctor and their beliefs say that child will die if it's god's will them I'm not only liable to lose respect but I'm liable to let the redneck in me come out and open a big ol can of whup ass. There are some beliefs that go beyond annoying and center on disgusting.

What is it you respect about this "brilliant mathematician"? I too may admire the intelligence of others but I sure won't have much respect for them if they are assholes as well.
