Wink Great songs, bad singers.

We've all heard them. Songs with great lyrics, good melodies - and singers that make you want to drive right off the fuggin' road.

List your candidates here.

Suede were a pretty good band but I really don't like Brett Anderson's voice (not that he's a bad singer, though).

I really, really, really hate Alanis Morrisette's voice. I don't even know if her songs are good or not, since I just can't get past the primal sense of revulsion her voice evokes in me.

And that's saying a lot, considering I actually like Robert Plant's and Axl Rose's voices, among others.

Also, as much as I'm ashamed to admit it, I've never been able to like Joe Strummer's voice. I'm not at all disputing the immense talent of the Clash -- they're great musicians, I can appreciate them intellectually, both for their political content and their willingness to experiment... but damn if I can't listen to that voice for only a few songs before I give up and go onto something else.

Almost anything by Frontline Assembly fits here. They're great musicians and all but they can't write lyrics to save their lives. Praise Jebus they don't even try with Delerium.

This new amalgam - Rage Against the Machine with Chris Cornell, Queens of the Stone Age or something? I can't possibly dissociate Cornell from Soundgarden, especially when Rage isn't playing Rage-esqe music.

Counting Crows' Adam Duritz - he makes poignant songs like "Round Here" and "Sullivan Street" almost unbearable at times.

I don't know why people make that mistake so often. I think you mean Audioslave.

This may be considered blasphemy by some, but I've always considered Robert Plant's singing to be the main impediment to my appreciating Led Zep. It's not that he sucks or anything ... I just think that he's not nearly as good as he thinks he is, and as a result, over does everything.

I'd take a poor singer who knows it, like Lou Reed, over an over singing Robert Plant any day of the week. Which may explain why most of my favourite bands don't have strong singers (Sonic Youth being the archetype).

Hmm. It's possible the word "slave" triggers repressed memories of a previous life working on a peach plantation in Southern Georgia. Anything that contains the word is forgotten thusly.

Which naturally reduces the likelihood that this post actually exists.

Or something.
