It's an interesting phenomenon. Musicians that get caught up too much in the craft of composition tend to forget what people find to be enjoyable music in the first place. It's not just musicians either, but anybody that gets really drawn into evaluating a piece of art from a technical viewpoint. I suppose after years and years of learning techniques, the way your brain perceives things start to shift and you really start to enjoy more 'technically good' pieces.
But, at the moment nobody really knows why arrangements of distinct sounds (which is what music is) have any kind of emotional impact on us, and why certain types of arrangements trigger certain types of emotions, so I think people are rather missing the point when they try to judge a piece of art by how it was crafted. I doubt our brains are going, "Hey, they threw in a bit of deception there. That dominant seventh resolves to the subdominant chord, not to the submediant as expected! We shall celebrate by sending a rush of adrenaline through the body!" |

![]() Dark Bronze Plant's band is pretty good. Having grown up with "classical"rock guitarists who played eric clapton, zeppelin, etc - I just don't see "radiohead" as the band they first think of when you ask them "who's the best guitar band EVAR?" Of course, I doubt radiohead gives a fuck - they aren't trying to be a guitar rock band (are they?). Their stuff is ok - I like some of their songs, but I don't think I would buy their album. I have some random songs by them off some soundtracks and that's good enough for me. scigirl |

DPB - since you don't have the exact same musical tastes as some other members here, than clearly you are a moron and you probably pray to baby jeebus too. Hell you probably listen to Britney Spears, you sick bastard.

Ok August - but he was attacking radiohead, and you attacked him personally. Maybe you are a member of radiohead, but I have my doubts.

This is a media and popular culture interenet message board. Keep that in mind. DPB can make stupid comments about radiohead, thats fine. We can make stupid comments about DPB. No problem at all. |

Okay, okay, I started the flame war. I apologize. I weasn't trying to brag, just trying to point out my credentials. Which, as I should've known, is not quite easy to do over an online board. So anyhow, before I derail the OP anymore, back to my question to Huginn, is it possible to articulate here what you like so much about Radiohead? |

DPB: fair enough.
Now to your question. What are you looking for? A mathematical view? that it is refreshing to see a band do something other than C-G power riffs? Radiohead have interesting and innovative musical arragnements that flow bueatifully (withouht always relying on some boring verse bridge chorus verse structure). Thom Yorke sings amazingly and with often brilliant lyrics. OK Computer is one of the most poetic attacks on the corporate world i've ever read. Quite frankly I can't think of anything NOT to like about an album like OK Computer or the Bends (some of their other work I have problems with). The guitars, lyrics, bass, drums, arragnments and vocals areall excellent. to me at least. ..... I'll take a quiet life a hand shake of carbon monoxide |
