"That's not thunder, Sally. It's the neighbors having raucous sex again."

We were talking about what we as teacherswould say, not the students. I hate this small town! GRR!

Holy cow! Now that "Better Than Ezra" song makes sense! The lyrics are something like "Cry, cry, cry in the sun... when the devil beats his wife."

BTE is from New Orleans, but I'm sure that folks from New Orleans come up with the same kind of shit that Texans do.
I'm originally from New Orleans, and my momma told me the same thing.

Actually, thunder is the sound of air being pushed outward when it is heated by the electric current that is lightning. It's exactly like the sounds made by electric sparks, because lightning is a giant electric spark.

Stories like God rearranging his furniture or angels bowling are fun just-so stories, but nothing more. It's interesting that they are expressed in terms of items familiar to the storytellers, such as furniture being rearranged or bowling balls hitting bowling pins.

What a bunch of crap (the response of the teacher). If you want a much better way of handling it that actually encompasses a teaching moment, get a hold of the book Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco.

From the reviews:
Quote:
A little girl overcomes her fear of thunderstorms with the help of her grandmother... Grandma consoles her frightened granddaughter by telling her that the dark clouds of the impending storm are nothing more than the ingredients for a Thunder Cake.
My wife is a kindergarten teacher and has used this book to calm her students on a number of occasions. No talk about furniture, God, angels, Satan or any other crap.
