Daggah,
Here is a quote from an atheist who seems to share my sentiments:
Quote:
Just why, in Darwin's name, are so many American and Canadian atheists so addicted to
sectarian, demonizational, blindly over-generalizing, and frankly hysterical views ?

My atheism is for me a source of happiness and strength.
I do not need to constantly put others down, such as theists, to build up my own ego.
I do not need to build up little persecution fantasies to fill my days.

I am an atheist, very much publically an atheist, and I have friends who are believers,
half-believers, non-believers, and don't-cares.
And I get along with my friends by respecting their beliefs halfway in front of them, even
while I'm disagreeing with them openly.

I do not need to spend my time disproving the Bible or other Christian contradictions; for
me that's a very long-dead issue.
I do not need to show fear where no fear is warranted.

Just call me The Happy Atheist.

Because atheists have improved Christianity over the years.
The secular responses to Christianity, and to intra-Christian fraternal warfare (see Spinoza, the Simultankirchen, other responses to the Thirty Years' War), have led to strengthening of religious humanist strands within Christianity, and on the whole made it a much nicer thing than it used to be .... for Christians as well as non-Christians.

I just want to say Gurdur, your comment was not lost on me. You make some good points. I think the free exchange of ideas benefits everyone. I actually come here in the hopes of discoursing with atheists like you. Fortunately you are not alone here. I just have to do a lot of wading somtimes to find you Guys. But, that said I still think this is the best site for finding some inteligent, reasonable atheists to chat with.

GeoTheo, HelenM and other Christians I have offended:

After looking at some of my posts I can see that they were unnecessarily insulting. Do not expect me to change my fundamental views but I will stop engaging in Christian baiting unless it is called for. There are some Christians that visit this board that do ask for it.

For what it is worth I apologize.

Oh that! Actually, I didn't think it essential. Besides that I tend to favor brevity.

So, it's my fault that I'm angry at your implication that I'm a scumbag?

You are not acting very 'Christian'.

Now you listen here. That I'm insulting you is a direct result of you calling people here scumbags. I have not seen ANY behavior here serious or extreme enough to warrant that accusation, much LESS a general one like that.

I have friends who are believers and friends who are not myself, and I have often times gotten on people's cases here for extremist statements.

I will do that whether someone is a theist or atheist. And I'm calling you on it now.

If I insult you it is because you deserve it.

Geo,

Have you ever thought that your thesis is self-validating?

Of course it might give the appearance that members of that group are mostly "haughty" because the quiet will stay that way and the loud will be loud regardless of which one is the majority.

Isn't that overgeneralizing in itself?

As it is for me.

Nor do I, or most of the atheists on this board. But this is a discussion board, where disagreements are far more likely to happen than in real life. While I have seen atheists putting theists down, I've also seen the reverse. Have you ever seen a Metacrock post? Or a Nomad post? Or a Radoth post? Or many of Layman's posts? And your post where you were a "atheist for a day" wasn't exactly your finest moment. I don't think the theists on this board are any better than atheists.

To me, that has always been a Christian failing. You should hear my parents talk.

Ditto.

I've found that that isn't always possible. I've had Christians take such exception to my lack of belief as to make cordial relations extremely difficult. It is they who challenge my beliefs, and I feel I have the right to defend them.

That's fine for him. On a board like this, I find it enjoyable. Please note that this is an atheist board, and if you're here, you're here by choice.

Agreed.

You can call me that too.

What does that tell you?</strong>

I smell horseshit...what are your sources for these "studies"?

Links or references please...
