This is probably old news to many of you, but I just learned about it. This just makes me respect her even less.
'Dr.' Laura abandons 'hard-core' Judaism Last Updated: Aug. 17, 2003 Inside TV & Radio Tim Cuprisin E-MAIL | ARCHIVE The latest word from "Dr." Laura Schlessinger shows just why her radio program has failed in many markets, including Milwaukee. Earlier this month, she told her audience that the cornerstone of her radio persona - an aggressively fundamentalist brand of Judaism - is no longer part of who she is. She told listeners that "my identifying with this entity and fulfilling the rituals, etc., of the entity - that has ended." "I still see myself as a Jew. But the spiritual journey in that direction - as hard-core as I was at it - just didn't fulfill something in me." The quotes from her show appeared at worldnetdaily.com, a Web site that carries a column by Schlessinger. Her shows are usually available for downloading for a fee at drlaura.com, but that Aug. 5 show was unavailable. She told her audience that Christians have been supportive of her, while "from my own religion, I have either gotten nothing . . . or two of the nastiest letters I have gotten." Schlessinger said: "I have envied all my Christian friends who really, universally, deeply feel loved by God." She's still No. 3 among national radio shows, according to Talkers Magazine, with a weekly audience estimated at 8 million. But after her TV show flopped - from low ratings, rather than any anti-Schlessinger boycott - she lost some bigger radio markets, including Milwaukee and Chicago, as the tone of her show changed. Her phenomenal early success had come from a simple formula: a nag who doesn't take baloney from whiny callers. That Schlessinger ended segments with a breezy "now go take on the day." She morphed into an amateur theologian who ordered listeners to "do the right thing," as she defined it. She was no longer entertaining and funny, just shrill. Her latest metamorphosis adds to the air of phoniness that has always surrounded her. The imperious title "Dr.", after all, comes from physiology, not psychology. She's a divorced woman who preached the sanctity of marriage and a moralist whose nude photos popped up on the Internet. Schlessinger has talked endlessly about the importance of honoring your parents. Yet her own estranged mother's decomposed body was discovered three months after she died alone in her home. In the old days, the good "Dr." was an entertaining fake. Now, she's just sad. |
