Default Creepy language

A friend of mine is very active in her church. The other day we were talking, and she said at a some church event "We saved over 20 children!"

I think she's Pentecostal?

Am I being oversensitive in thinking that proclaiming "We saved x amount children" kinda creepy? I mean what do they tell these kids anyway?

Yeah, I agree.

First they just do lots of fun stuff with the kids, usually. When they're starting to get sucked into the lifestyle, they start scaring them with all kinds of threats. "If you don't accept Jebus as your Personal Lord and Savior, you're going to *BURN* in *HELL* for *ETERNITY*!!! Better get on your knees quick, kiddo, cause you could get hit by a bus tonight! That's the simplified version anyway.

Around here, our local religious community has a huge conference every year called "Harvest." As in "harvesting souls for God" That one really gives me the heebeegeebees. I have to see these big bilboards every day when I'm driving for months. I mean, is it just me? I think that is really damn creepy.

<shudders>

Oh heah, and the "Campus Crusade for Christ" meeting announcements in brightly colored chalk all over the sidewalks at the University. That one's pretty creepy too. I could go on.

Yeah, kinda gives you the image of a 50' Jebus with a scythe. Harvesting, you know?

Harvesting souls tends to have some fairly negative connotations. Do you think it crossed their minds how evil that sounds?

Thats almost the same image I get (but including fire & some plants being uprooted). The way they use that word gives me the shivers. Anyone ever seen Motel Hell?

I think you are right. I find it more than just creepy. I find it positively disturbing.

"Campus crusade for Jesus" and "Harvest" are very scary indeed.
If I had to see that bilboard over and over, I would move away.

Sounds like a good premise for a comedy sketch (or a better horror movie ): the Grim Reaper, face hidden by his hood, slinks in during the night to take a soul. As he swings the scythe, the hood falls down to reveal the face of Jebus

The whole concept and wording makes me think of "Children of the Corn" for some reason...
