Hi, i've just recently purchased a new PC (about a month ago) it has Windows XP (not sure which version) as the Operating System. I have Norton Internet Security as my firewall. Unfortunately this doesn't stop popups from flooding my PC. I heard that these popups come through Windows messenger but it doesn't seem possible to turn it off. Anyone have suggestions??
Thanks in advance! |

Find AdAware and install it on your machine. (It's freeware.) Also, I use Spybot Search&Destroy, because it makes me feel better. But for popups, AdAware is best-- just Google for it.

Another option is to us Opera as your web browser. IMO, Internet Explorer is one of the worst I have used.

if the problem is that you're getting spammed thru windows messenger, then, yes, there *is* a way to turn it off...and this is how to do it:
http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/docs/messagepopup/ ...i had the same problem. followed the directions on this page and i haven't had to deal with the stupid thing since. |

You could always contact your ISP about that shit. They probably have some kind of pop-up blocker.

If you a e using Internet Explorer go into Tools->Internet Options->Security... ...and disable things like scripting, cookies and so on. If there are sites where you need these and that you trust then you can put them in the trusted sites list which you can set to medium. This method has stopped popups almost completely for me and it only allows a few cookies I can trust from certain sites. I can disable certian cookies from the privacy tab on IE 6. DC |

A cheap and easy alternative is to download the google toolbar. You get automatic access to google as a search engine, as well as having an in-built popup blocker.
Works like a charm for me ever since downloading it. |

Go to Kim Komando's shareware page and get the freeware edition of Popup Killer from PanicWare, it works like a champ. I got the ZoneAlarm firewall from the same site.
