I got paid to travel, but that's the navy for ya. If it weren't for some unforeseen circumstances cutting my career short, I would've racked up a lot more countries, too- all of my foreign visits were over a period of just 15 months, on 2 routine deployments and 1 major excersise(we only got 1 short visit to Port Moresby during that, though).

I guess I should've said 8 countries in my earlier post, since we're now counting our home countries(all 6 states and both territories), too.

Oh, and do the territorial waters of foreign countries count? If so, I could add Vanuatu, New Caledonia and The Phillipines to my tally. Am I grasping at straws now or what?

I think that Hong Kong should be counted as a country, at least before 1997. British colonies are not part of the UK, but separate countries. It is the French who pretend that some overseas territories are part of France. The British don't do this.

That reminds me: I ought to add Jersey and Guernsey, which are not part of the UK (Scotland still is!). I also forgot the Irish Republic.

Jersey, Guernsey and the other Channel Islands are an interesting anomaly. They have QE2 as head of state, but not in her capacity as Queen of the UK. They belong to her as Duke of Normandy. Each has its own Government and legal system (based on Anglo-Norman law).

How long are you staying in these places? I counted Canada as one of my other countries--but I didn't spend much time there (it was on a family vacation and I was little--5/7?--although I remember things like the park we visited and crossing the border).

I traveled for almost a year in South America and I actually spend less money than I would have living a very boring life at home... if you can bear staying and youth hostels or cheap hotels. You could travel a year reasonably comfortable for $6000-10000 in South America probably a lot less for Asia.

And oh I forgot to mention the most horrible country for me I ever been to on my list: Paraguay.

Don't feel too bad, I can only add Venezuela to that list. Oh, I forgot to add Oklahoma Territory, USA and the Republic of Texas..

Hmm...that's interesting. None of the British colonies are listed as part of the 193 countries of the world (or 192 if you don't count Taiwan).

19, so far.

But one question.
Why is it that I can say I've been to Burma when I stepped over the border from Thailand, but I can't say I've been to Mongolia or Russia or Turkey when I've seen many thousands of square miles of those contries when flying over them?

Not fair, I think.

I've noticed that some list places like Scotland, which is a political subdivision of the United Kingdom. If we go this route, I'd claim England, Scotland, Wales and Cornwall. Is that kosher?
The poll didn't specify what constitues a 'country' therefore people can interpret it how they like. However, Cornwall can't be considered a separate country by any conceivable criterion nowadays whereas England, Scotland and Wales can.

I visited several different countries while they were still part of the Soviet Union and three more while they were still Yugoslavia. So the two countries I visited in the 1970s have become seven, allowing me to leapfrog an entire category and bringing my total to over 25

It depends what the list means. They aren't, for example, represented at the UN. The nearest they are likely to get to being considered in any sense part of the UK arises in the case of Gibraltar, where an EU fudge is going to let them take part in electing an MEP as part of the SW England constituency. But they aren't administered from there and have their own elected Government.

Its been a while since I did any traveling. Lets see if I can remember all of them:

1. Mexico
2. Spain
3. Italy
4. France
5. Greece
6. Turkey
7. Venezuela
8. Colombia
9. Brazil
10. Uruguay
11. Argentina
12. Chile
13. Peru
14. Ecuador
15. Panama
16. Jamaica
17. Aruba
18. Curacao
19. Trinidad
20. Barbados
21. Bermuda
22. Portugal
23. Malta
24. St Martin
25. Yugoslavia
26. Bahamas
27. British Virgin Islands
28. Haiti

Thats all I can remember off the top of my head, but I am sure Im missing a couple of Caribbean Islands though maybe since Aruba and Curacao are both part of the Netherlands Antilles, I shouldnt count them separately. I also left out the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, since they are U.S. territories.

I've only been to U.S. and Canada, but I had a stopover (that I wouldn't recommend) here...
