Must agree with you there Vorkosigan old chum.

Plus, there is the crazy consumption of Chinese preventative "medicines" that leads to stratospheric levels of liver cancer.

Sanitation is a big issue - I recall the SARS outbreak highlighted this rather strikingly.

And food hygiene. Even here in Taipei there a plenty of places that do a roaring trade where I would be fearful to buy food.

Not to mention the bout of food poisoning I got from some guo tie on Jan 1st.

Pretty much anything bought from a night market looks lethal to me!

Curious on this--all I'm finding on Google is links between Hepatitis B (common over there) and liver cancer.

This article discusses some of the ways in which numbers are often combined to produce results which are essentially meaningless.

I could be mistaken here - I have googled also, and can find reams and treams of stuff on hep B, but bugger all about the effect of Chinese herbal remedies.

Mind you, many of my colleagues at work eat this stuff like candy, every day. I would be surprised if taking regular doses of pharmaceutically active herbs has zero effect. Maybe there is someone with more expertise on the subject that could shed some light?

Yes, but also according to this article:

Chinese drink green tea mostly; it contains energetic and healing properties which are the mystic strength and basis of the life.
Sounds like garbage to me.

The article also says:
Quote:
Right decor of the living quarters is the guarantee of health and happiness. To attract material and spiritual riches to the house Chinese recommend placing plants or pictures of nature in the southern or eastern part of your apartment. If the spirit of the picture is good it will attract good things to the apartment. Many of Chinese houses have elements filled with water in the interior: aquarium, a small fountain or a bowl filled with colored water.
Spirits in pictures?

Plants in the south or East of the house? Does this apply in the southern hemisphere too?

If only longevity were so easy. Feng Shui is mostly drivel - there may be some small aesthetic or ergonomic value, but I have only seen superstitious nonsense.

This article is laughable.

Started out as culture bashing - the OP was linking to an article claiming superiority of Chinese culture over European culture. Don't know about the OP's motives, but the article is fair game for ridicule.

Yeah, that article is really biased. I just don't understand why they take it out on China instead of the article.

It's weird to see people argue over an article from pravda.ru.
Russians call it pravda.vru, which means pravda.i lie
