Who woulda thunk it?

I saw someone else around here mention an "Irony Meter" - got an extra one? I think mine just imploded.

You have to remember that these days the religious right has a revisionist idea of church-state separation. Basically, they more or less affirm the free exercise clause, while denying the establishment clause. The only things they admit the First Amendment disallows are making a particular religion (Christian or otherwise) illegal, and establishment-clause violations that favor one denomination over another. This allows them to say that they are in favor of religious freedom (at least, as long as they have little enough influence to need this claim).

That's the position of D. James Kennedy, anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if Pat Robertson is thinking in similar terms.

I watched Pat Roberson for years. He is for a righteous, Christian government that makes righteous, Christian laws based on the Ten Commandments. He also delighted in blaming the gays, atheists, and all the other sinners in this country for God's wrath on 9-11.

Sounds to me like he endorses the Seperation of Any Religion Other Than Christianity and State.

I think it's clear what he really wants: freedom of religion in Iraq so Christian missionaries will have free reign. Once he converts 70% or so of the population to Robertson brand Christianity he'll stop advocating separation.

I think we've got a consensus here. Pat isn't for a seperation of church and state because it's superior. Rather, I think he just doesn't want the Muslims in charge over there.
