those bands (greatful dead, etc...) aren't really badass.... at all. Here are some bands that do give me goosebumps.

Opeth (best stright up metal band out there)
Pg. 99 (r.i.p.)
Blood Brothers (emo violence with a lot of sass)
Radiohead (OK computer era)
Envy (the one from Japan)
City of Caterpillar (pure amazing)
Godspeed you black emperor!
Neurosis
Racebannon

all those band are better than you

Cool

Tool. Specifically:

From Lateralus:

Reflection
The Patient
Schism

From Aenema:

Stinkfist (one line in particular - "Something kind of sad about/ the way that things have come to be/ de-sensitized to everything/ what became of subtlety?" - that always gives me goosebumps for some reason.)
Die Eier Von Satan (Eggs of Satan) (sounds so chillingly Nazi-ish ... and apparently it's just a recipe for some kind of pastry laced with Turkish hash )
Pushit
Forty-Six & 2
Useful Idiot
Eulogy

From Undertow:

Sober
Prison Sex

Then, of course, there's Nine Inch Nails. Way too much to list any specifics, especially once you factor in all the singles and remixes and miscellaneous oddities. But off the top of my head, there's ...

Something I can Never Have
Wish ("Fixed" remix)
The Great Below
Closer to God (remix)
The Perfect Drug
Deep
Mr. Selfdestruct
Heresy (an atheist's anthem )
A Warm Place

Ah, I could go on and on.

Goreki's Third Symphony with Dawn Upshaw ( I don't think I can listen to this without tears coming to my eyes.

Just about anything by Arvo Part. (especially Miserere, Tabula Rasa)

Mango, Embers of Eden - Bruce Cockburn (Breakfast in New Orleans,...)

Further to Fly - Paul Simon

I Told Him That My Dog Wouldn't Run, Me and That Train - Patty Larkin

Smashing Pumpkins - Siva, Geek U.S.A, the everlasting gaze

Led Zeppelin - Baby, I'm gonna leave you, Whole lotta Love

Deftones - My own summer (Shove it)

Mahler - Symphony no 3 (first movement), Symphony no 8 (Veni Creator Spiritus)

Beethoven: Symphony no 3, 5, 8

Antonin Dvorak, Symphony #9, Opus 95 ("The New World")

I'll second Orff's "O Fortuna" -- I can't listen to that without getting a lump in the throat.

Copeland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" is excellent too, but "Appalachian Spring" is even better, in my opinion (especially the variations on "Simple Gifts").

I love all the Brandenburg Concerti, especially since I'm a flutist. But no piece of music ever written grabs you right from the beginning like the "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor," in my opinion.

Cheers,

Michael

you got the bands right, not all inclusive but both nin and tool kick alot of ass but I do question your song selection, plus you didnt even mention tool's first cd opiate that is all kick ass. every song a great one, well except for the hidden track which is only ok.

but on undertow you completely overlooked crawl away which just fucking incredible.

lateralus really was as good as the first 3 albums. I didnt really like any song on the cd. I gave it away after a couple of weeks of listening to it. I think I mightbuy it again or download to give the cd a second chance.

anyway back to the critique.

on aenema you ignore the title track which kicks so much ass.

sorry, I take my tool very seriously.

maynard kicks alot of ass.

Top 7 off the top of my head on a rainy evening:

Machine Gun - Jimi Hendrix. It sounds new and fresh every time I listen to it. It just knocks me down.

Goodbye Pork Pie Pat - Mingus

Fables of Faubus (original instrumental version) - Mingus

Water - The Roots

Cherokee (can't remember what he renamed it) - Charlie Parker

Boplicity - Miles Davis

No Woman No Cry - Bob Marley
