I have several video files in the .avi format. I know they are videos because the guy who gave them to me can watch them on his PC (unsure on OS). But when I open them in Windows Media Player or RealOnePlayer I only get audio. The player treats it just like an audio file. Am I missing a codec? If so, how do force one of these pieces of spamware to download it?

Probably missing the appropriate version of the DivX video codec.

Also, some times you can just try a different player. REALone player usually plays my .avis

Downloaded the codec from DivX.com, thanks. In the past WMP has always been able to download them automatically.

In Windows Explorer, you can right-click on the file, select 'properties' and 'summary'. This (should) show you what codec is required to play the file.
