I was given this small piece of jewelry recently. I think it came from Ireland but don't know any details. I was thinking of wearing it as a lapel pin on a suit or sport jacket (for the one time every 3 years or so I wear one) but I can't decide if it will be interpreted as a Christian symbol. What do you infidels think?

Yep, I'd say it's a cross. It kinda looks like the cross that Presbyterians use (cross with a circle around the center).
I used to be Presbyterian. NPM |

Why don't you just wear it like an X? It would seem less like a cross.

Yggdrasill's right... it would look pretty damn cool like that, too.

Wear it with pride! Seems the origins of the Celtic cross stem from Hinduism, the circle symbolizing the female and the cross the male (phallus). So, it is a symbol of sexual union. That's one interpretation, anyhow. Might open up some interesting discussions with a Christian or two.

If you wear it in the "+" style, there will inevitably be those who will interpret it as a Christian symbol.
On the other hand, cross symbols have been used by quite a lot of different cultures, including Native Americans, and long predate Christianity. So if you like it, who cares? Cheers, Michael |

Trim off the edges and you can be an X-man.
