Even though I drag race locally on a poor man's budget, I voted for Rallying. If I could get the financial backing I would do it in a heart beat. Until then I'll race at a level I can afford.

2 months and 8 days till the track opens!

Bleh, don't do that to a WRX!

Erm...well definitely mod it. But please don't put it on rough rally tracks! That car deserves better.

And as a dedicated 'wish-I-had-the-money-to-rice-out-my-Laser' guy, I voted for the only thing I could. Drag racing.

You'll never catch me street racing. At least, not SERIOUSLY street racing. I may try to show up one of those Mustang guys (come on, seriously! Almost five liters of displacement and 250hp is the BEST you guys can do? There's a replacement for displacement. It's called "Honda." :-P ) by out-accelerating them at a stop light, but I never do it in traffic, and I never go significantly over the speed limit. (5 miles over is my usual limit.)

Well, the '03 SVT Cobra gets 390bhp, but that is supercharged though.

Oh and IMHO, most people who buy sports cars wouldn't have a friggin clue how to drive them for maximum performance. If you've got some drag experience I'd lay good odds you could probably drag off pretty much anyone driving anything!

Drag racing. What's not to love.
Top Fuel- 0 to 100 mph .7 seconds. 1/4 mile in 4.5 secs at 330mph.
Funnycar almost as fast.
Pro Stock 6.8 sec 1/4 mile at 202mph.
Pro stock bike 7.2 sec 1/4 mile at 190mph and the three time champ is a girl!

It also looks a lot steeper when you are at the top of it preparing to go through the section, than when you are just standing on the sides watching. It is fun to ride.

cheers,

Default Re: Your favourite type of motorsport

I, and my family, like all forms of motor sport. But we particularly like F1 and WRC.

My younger son has a Subaru WRX and rallies with my older son as navigator.

For 30 years I was a volunteer racing official for SCCA and other groups. When I could move fast enough I was a Turn Marshall. When I slowed down too much I became an Observer, the guys who wear the headphones at each turn and report what's happening to Race Control. They also serve as the link between Race Control and the Flag Team.

I have worked everything from Motorcycles to F1: NASCAR at Riverside; IMSA; TransAm; CanAm; SCORE; F1 at Long Beach; CART at Riverside and Long Beach; Vintage racing; Karts; and all the many kinds of club racing, both in California and on the US East Coast.

I also rallied and worked rallies. I was quite successful in TSD rallying on Long Island NY with my then 9-year-old son as navigator. I recently got out my old rally trophies and polished them up.

I finally slowed down to the point where the effort involved was greater than the pleasure gained and I quit. Now I watch Speed Channel a lot.

F1 I can follow religiously. The other categories each have their classic races. I don't usually get off on motorcycle racing, but the TT is crazy. GT can be exciting, but not usually. Not enough competitors keeping that hopping. Hell, even a tractor pull is fun if they're real farmers driving real working tractors, not stupid chromed twin V-8s.

As far as tracks go, F1 just needs more room. Malaysia is flat as hell, but it's big and wide with room for passing. Of the old tracks, Mont Tremblant (Canadian Grand Prix from way, way back) has Namerow corner. I clung like a limpet to the cliff above that uphill-downhill decreasing radius corner watching Gilles Villeneuve win the Formula Atlantic championship that got him into F1. You just can't race the modern cars on tracks like that. Oh, well.

And let's be bold - time to ditch Monaco. If you don't have all weekend to watch qualifying, the race itself is just a parade.

I won't watch the Indy 500. That's just like watching a blender full of frogs. Concrete walls are stupid.

What I want F1 to do is cut back on the front & rear downforce and bring back slicks! F1 is so damn boring with no passing.

So the International Swedish Rally is coming up tomorrow. There was this kickoff thing at the town (Karlstad) square where I live. I even saw a few of the WRC cars roll by.Grnholm and Saintz and others

Funny thing... the rally entourage comes here every year. Only once have I gone out into the woods to watch. That was because my dad made me...

In the hope of making at least someone jealous and/or angry about me being an idiot for not taking the chance to watch some top class rally.
