Now I'll have to go check with the IS guys. I use DSL at home, and I know everyone in the area has unique IP's. I'm curious now if. 1. Shared IP's are now in use.. 2. How they work, since the IP address is your computers individual identity on the net. But, definately something worth investigating. |

okay,
Confirmed,, People CAN share the same proxy server (as everyone here in my office does.. but each machine on the proxy has a unique machine number that identifies it on the proxy server) AOL's IP's are from whichever random server in the particular area is selected. |

Just to clear something up here.
Typical IP addresses look like 111.22.333.444 With a dialup connection the last 444 will often change on each connection. Sometimes that last 33.444 with change. I've never seen the first 111.22 change. I just did a check on the IP address that gysgt uses (That's what caused the server busy a few minutes ago by th way). I asked the system to list all users who have logged in under the partial IP address xxx.xx.xxx that gysgt uses. It came up with two users. gysgt and 2PAC. |

And the only scenario where two computers are using the exact same IP numbers is a hacker technique (sometimes referred to as ghosting). That is.. the hacker uses your IP to do his dirty work, however, it's a one way connection. |
