207.65.28.75 for example could be shared by several people at any one time. I have seen up to 40 or so people share an IP address.

Cable and DSL are usually unique and localized to a city as far as I know.

Thank you for the demonstration, Karyn. Let's hear a round of applause for my lovely assistant Karyn, everybody.

Karyn (cat)..

You butt muncher!!!!

That's a great question. Not even the moderators knew he was banned. Only the admins (and the person posting as 2PAC) could have known that.

Now I'll have to go check with the IS guys. I use DSL at home, and I know everyone in the area has unique IP's.

I'm curious now if.

1. Shared IP's are now in use..
2. How they work, since the IP address is your computers individual identity on the net.

But, definately something worth investigating.

okay,

Confirmed,,
People CAN share the same proxy server (as everyone here in my office does.. but each machine on the proxy has a unique machine number that identifies it on the proxy server)

AOL's IP's are from whichever random server in the particular area is selected.

Just to clear something up here.

Typical IP addresses look like 111.22.333.444

With a dialup connection the last 444 will often change on each connection. Sometimes that last 33.444 with change. I've never seen the first 111.22 change.

I just did a check on the IP address that gysgt uses (That's what caused the server busy a few minutes ago by th way).

I asked the system to list all users who have logged in under the partial IP address xxx.xx.xxx that gysgt uses. It came up with two users. gysgt and 2PAC.

Well, I guess I made the "server too busy" messages doubly bad because I just ran the exact same search. gysgt and 2PAC are the only ones using that IP range. Since gysgt had inside info that only 2PAC and the admins had there really is no doubt.

Are you ready to end the charade?

The last 4 digits changing is referred to as a 'floating IP'. This is only available with ISP's who offer it. Many ISP's used fixed IP's.

And the only scenario where two computers are using the exact same IP numbers is a hacker technique (sometimes referred to as ghosting). That is.. the hacker uses your IP to do his dirty work, however, it's a one way connection.
