I don't mind them intervening, I do get a little carried away with my own sarcasm at times (sometimes just can't resist the scathing one-liner, especially if it strikes me as funny) I just take exception when they are not even-handed about it. To watch a single sentence deleted and then have whole paragraphs of spleen coming back at me without the moderators lifting a finger, sucks.

When emotions get heated on all sides, I avoid naming names because I might leave someone off. To avoid posibilities of bias, I just simply advise everyone to keep their emotions under control. Most of the time people from this forum get the hint.

That is a good rule of thumb for topics and/or people that get very emmotional. I've been to a few forums that had some bad moderators, who would get involved in topics violate their own rules and hide behind their moderating powers. These forums also had policies that restricted complaints about moderators and admins to private emails, which were almost always ignored. Thankfully, II can actually handle public critism so we have a public Complaint Forum to address such issues. Since it is public we can't cover up our problems. That is why I think we rarely have any problems with moderators abusing their powers when they get involved with threads.

It is tradition on E/C and some other forums that moderators, not only be interested in the topic but actually be one of the more informed posters. They get asked to mod not only because they are fair, but also because other posters value their opinion.

I quess we're a bunch of alpha males and female.

I think a good example was when I became angry at someone or other, and was writing some rather cutting things. A moderator appologized to my victim. They did not chastise me, or threaten me with any reprisal. I calmed down (after a few growls) and deleted most of my posts in that thread.

I've been impressed with how well the mods here have balanced moderating and participating. I think it'd be a bit unfair to expect volunteer mods to not participate, and as long as they're labelled "Moderator" and there's some way to appeal if a person thinks there's a problem with fairness, I think it's fine.

Actually Rufus, I don't blame people who get a little emotional debating the issues. So long as it is the issue at hand and not someone's personality of course.
