Hell, if I had a nickel for every time, I'd still have a whole lotta dollars.

That's what I wanted to know. Does anybody recall the public reaction to the USSC decision that barred mandatory school prayer? Granted, there weren't the radio and TV gabfests like there are now, but surely there was some outcry. How do the two decisions compare?

Ok, let me take a wild guess here. Call is completely full of shit on this claim. Is that accurate? I'm not even in America nor do I follow such cases but I can guess that what is prophibited is official prayer that is forced.

Recall the scene in the film "Miracle on 34th Street" in which the district attorney is trying to prove there is no Santa Claus. He's forced to give up the case when his own son testifies to his belief in Santa and the U.S. Post Office, "an agent of the federal government," in the words of the defense lawyer, brings hundreds of letters addressed to Santa to the courtroom where one "Kris Kringle" is on trial.

An apt comparison that, God to Santa Claus.

I predict this ruling will not stand, even if the U.S. Supreme Court upholds it. If upheld on appeal, it will turn millions of Americans into lawbreakers, because they'll continue to say the Pledge of Allegiance, just as many continue to pray before school athletic contests in violation of court prohibitions.

Lyin' for Jeebus. How quaint.

I was around at the time, but I don't remember it. (I was in public school in Maryland in the 50's and I remember saying the Lord's prayer, and having Bible readings, but by the time of the decision I was in high school in the midwest and had other things on my mind.) I think the major reaction was to ignore the decision.

I'm old enough to remember all the right wingers, Baptists and such, screaming that school desegregation and inter-racial unions (jerry Falwell for one) were the end of civilization. The Christian shamen and their political stooges have lost control long since and just don't realize yet that most Americans aren't interested in seeing this beceome a theocracy controlled by buck-shoe-wearing, flat earth affirming, Pentecostal trailer trash with eight grade educations and IQs in high 60s.

Please remember you said that next time you complain about Cal Thomas hurling insults at atheists. Like, next April Fool's Day.

In Cal's defense, he is opposed to the excessive entanglement of churches in political affairs. Unfortunately, aside from that issue, his commentaries are irredeemably ignorant.

He only adopted that policy after getting burned with the Moral Majorities forays into politics. But I guess that's better than nothing.
