What an odd thing to say!! In your experience, do you find that believers experience less stress, tension, etc., than atheists? Is their "crutch" of theism doing a good job of helping them handle life? And I'm curious - are the majority of atheists that you are acquainted with really a bunch of drinking, smoking, carousing hedonists who are just seeking some help with their meaningless existence? I really would like to know.... |

Well I think you and most atheists would and do miss the whole point...that Theism is SUPPOSED to be a "crutch". More importantly, our relationship or affinity to and with Christ as Saviour is most certainly designed to help us cope with life's problems, rather than depending on our own ingenuity. Unfortunately, for myself,it hasn't been as beneficial as I would like, but I blame only myself, and don't blame others for discrediting my faith even more because of my weaknesses. It is only natural to go with whatever one finds their strength and inspiration in,even if it's only in oneself. Or one's family,as important as that is. But for me,I find no inspiration in the world around me,but I suppose you can say that's my own anti-social problem or what not. As far as turning to Jesus rather than some other "deity",I can only say that He was all I ever knew or was taught, even though I actually never had a teacher. But of course I knew about other religions, but they made little or no sense, and I only got a feeling of being self-absorbed from "religion" in general. And I got no sense of self-awareness or the potential for self-improvement from any new age type of beliefs. Actually,I needed much more than to simply withdraw into myself, seeing I was already to withdrawn to begin with. Other "flaky" type faiths seemed a bit too humanistic in their origins,as obvious as that is to many now. And I know that man wrote the bible, but what did you expect...that some aliens from another planet would have written it?? Bottom line is that I had a choice, and I chose the Bible without question. And I didn't believe because I wanted to...I simply believed because I did,as far back as I can remember. Did you begin to love your mother or father simply because you decided to one day? How about your wife and kids? What other things have you believed in simply because you wanted to? Well I see God as being just as real as you do that computer in front of you. I even feel the Holy Spirit as much as you would feel that alcohol beginning to affect your motor skills. Or as as much as you feel sad over watching those pictures of the Trade Centers falling over again,on that TV that is only for entertainment purposes alone, and is in no way a vice of any kind...if you say so?! And no,I have never met or known any atheists who indulge in hedonistic endeavors,so I guess that's proof enough that they don't exist. I only know people who believe in God,so is that likewise enough to prove His existance? What's the point of even pointing out that YOU personally never commit such wicked acts? Point being,it really doesn't matter, since I can't speak for all believers, neither can one atheist speak for all others. I only know how I came to commit my life to Christ, instead of to some Veangeful, warlike God named Allah, who the (Bull)Shiite Muslims follow. Or to some skeleton like Hindhu who prays to 100's of gods. Geeez,I have enough trouble with One! But don't take my "testimony" as a representative of all Christians, since I have a tendency to get a bit too lighthearted in my words. When in fact, this is much more SERIOUS than I can ever express here. And I need not say more, lest my many words begin to seem important enough to ridicule...er,respond too...ooops,too late. Take it easy... [ September 25, 2002: Message edited by: Theitist ]</p> |

I think this thread raises one of the great enigmas of the human condition: that for some people, belief is as certain as knowledge while for others it is incomprehensible.
We see in the posts here that the believer experiences something which is as real as sunlight. So why don’t I? I never made up my mind that I didn’t want to - that I wasn’t ever going to. My brother and sister are both believers. I cannot understand why, if God was real and important to them, it ceased to be important or real to me. What’s going on here? |
