How does it indicate that it's supposed to happen "in the end times" as opposed to it being just a failed prophecy that christians are now trying to excuse away?

Uh, you have to have the Holy Spirit in you or you can't understand?

Because Jesus never said He would rule over Israel and bring peace until His second coming, and since His second coming hasn't happened yet - walla - end time prophecy.

The question was, is there any indication whatsoever in the original prophecy that this was an "end time" prophecy? If not, how would you feel about some other religious group whose leader allegedly fulfilling only part of a prophecy using the excuse that the other part just hasn't happened yet?

That would be the reason most Jews don't believe Jesus is the Messiah. They expected Him to restore Israel on his first coming, which He didn't do.

So you understand that selective fulfillment of prophecy combined with assurances that the rest will come later is only preaching to the choir and renders any claims of prophecy fulfillment in the first place meaningless?

Read the next set of paragraphs after the initial prophecy. It states the King would protect Israel from the Assyrians.

"Ruler in Israel" is also interpetated as being a "Spiritual" Israel, BTW. (Christians believe that all the physical world promises of the OT have been replaced by spiritual ones--this seems to show some slight gnosticism)
