I'm with you. That's an excellent idea, to have left it sitting there stinking and smoldering forever - a reminder that can't be ignored. It's not like lower Manhattan smelled like a rose before 9/11 anyway...

And like you, I feel mighty sick everytime I recall what I saw that day, and mighty sick when I see our government's spastic reactions to it.

FWIW, Mormons are Christians who eschew the cross as a symbol. They would likely feel uncomfortable with the cross as part of the monument, too, but for different reasons.

If Ann Coulter writes it, it's either a fabrication or a delusion (unless all her material is really a big joke, like performance art). Or else her sources were mistaken. Ellen Johnson asked that idiot Hannity the other day "what does Christianity have to do with the attacks?" Of course, he complained about the intolerance of liberals.

Give the "cross" to some religious organization and put up a wall with the names of the victims.

It blows me away that not only do people actually believe God is responsible for the cross, but that they would continue to worship a monster whose work of art is two pieces of metal standing on the grave of 3000 people. The irony is that I imagine these same people reading about the soccer fan killing himself so that his ghost could help his team and saying, "what a nut?"

I agree. Heck, the 10 Commandments gained a foothold in many communities because of a stupid movie. It would be much more reasonable to assume that this terrible event would persuade many city councils to erect rep;ica crosses. Pat Robertson would probably be selling them!

And since almost 3,000 people died one would think that practically all religions and non-religious folks were victims. So if the cross stays, to be fair, they would have to put up at least all the symbols the US govt. recognizes;

This is the second time I've heard someone refer to this. I'm curious - is there a history to this? Was the "10C" movie overtly used in some way in the US to promote the posting of the 10Cs around the place?

This was a little before my cognitive period (Late 50's) but the movie The Ten Commandments was released. Apparently the studio decided it would be a great promotion to donate copies of the biblical commandments to communities.

Some towns took them up on it. The studio sent the director (Cecil B. DeMille) and/or some actors, including Moses (Charlton Heston) to the ceremonies "dedicating" the sacred text. And the local media would carry a story about the ceremony as the movie opened in the local theater.
