I run an irish ceili dance every Monday night of the year that's not a holiday. We and the bar decided to not do the ceili tonight. The bar will be filled with drunken once-a-year irish who are too stupid to get out of the way of the stepdancers (I was horribly injured one year when I tried to avoid crushing a woman's hand because she decided to lean on the stage while we were dancing). I hate St.Patrick's day. I hate the nasty stage-irish stereotypes that get trotted out every year. I hate that the idiot drunks can't tell real irish music from music hall drek like "McNamara's Band" and "Too Ra Loo Ra." Not to mention "Danny Boy." And I hate those damn "Kiss me, I'm irish" shirts. They're all insults to real irish culture, which I spend time, money and energy trying to preserve all year 'round.
St.Patrick's Day is one day of the year that I'm ashamed to be an irish-american. You're not irish, you can't be irish You don't know "Danny Boy." Nor "Too Ra Loo Ra Loo Ra", or even "Irish Eyes You've got a lot of nerve saying you're from Ireland So cut out all the nonsense, and sing "McNamara's Band." |

The Onion article was funny!
I "celebrated" by having a greenish-yellow drink in a green-stemmed glass. Ok, so it was a margarita. So it was a Mexican bar/restaurant. At least it wasn't crowded! ![]() |

I only went out yesterday because my husband wanted to take me to a local shop to buy me a birthday present. Then we went out to dinner. I stayed far, far away from the pub because I've seen what it looks like on St.Patrick's day. I no longer even take "green beer" gigs unless they're offering serious money. Though if we ever manage to record a CD, I may change my mind. CD sales can tip the balance between an okay-paying gig and a high paying one.
My other project for the evening (I'm just learning how to do animated gifs): ![]() The Rising Step. I got lazy halfway through animating a Rise and Grind step. |
