Well, damn. I knew something was up when his columns ended in Natural History last year. He had been seriously ill, as indicated in the obituary, on and off for twenty years. He wrote a great column on his initial diagnosis back then.
Actually, I believe that he had always been scheduled to end his monthly Natural History essays at the turn of the millenium. He used to talk about this back in the early/mid 90's. |

Damn. Double-damn. A great man, and an excellent scientist has left the building. A sad day.
And to all fundies drooling and wetting their pants at the thought of an EVILUTIONIST burning in hell(such as certain freepers). Fuck you, and fuck your mindless barbaric cult-beliefs. |

Actually, I have his last essay book (I forget the title); in it, he had clearly stated that he had wanted to end his Natural History columns in a graceful manner. So he didn't have any unfinished NH columns

Sorry, I misspelled what SJG had suffered from. It's abdominal mesothelioma.

At least there are no death-bed conversion stories floating around yet. Though I think it's only a matter of time until some creationist fundy claims Gould renounced evolution and punctuated equilibrium à la Darwin and accepted G. Zus in his heart.
I still hope this doesn't happen but I'm afraid some things never change |
