Question Where is the buckle, exactly?

I've heard many different people claim they life in the "buckle of the Bible Belt." They are often in different places. TN, OK, AK, MO, KY, etc. THAT'S ONE BIG FRIGGIN' BUCKLE!

So, where, truly, is the buckle? I'm thinkin' it's here in OK -- what with the orientation of the mainstream media and state, county, and local governments here being dominated by Southern Baptists, the predominance of Billy Graham posters, and the number of run-in's I have with door-to-door tract-toting "soul-winners" -- but I'm prollyrong.

I'd like to get folks who live in the Bible Belt to let us know what you think is the buckle, and why, so I can get a grasp on where to avoid in my travels.

(maybe this should be a poll...)

Dallas, perhaps, though Oklahoma City/Tulsa are candidates as well.

I've referred to my little burg as the buckle, but I don't think that's really accurate, as we're up here in the Appalachians in little hollers...
We're more like the hole in the giant horse's ass that is Christianity.

On this one you're prollyright!

Not only are we poor Okies saddled with Christian Coalition blow-up dolls Don Nickles and James "Ignorant as Apple Pie" Inhofe as United States Senators (Inhofe finished second to Rick Santorum in a poll to find the Dumbest U.S. Senator - Santorum should demand a recount) - but the largest newspaper in the state currently holds the title as The Worst Newspaper in America - Columbia Journalism Review.

From the article:

Quote:
Maybe you could find critics like these in any American city where an influential newspaper and billionaire publisher reign, but it's doubtful they could match the fervor of these aggrieved Oklahomans, these Democrats and Republicans of all colors and classes, ranchers, teachers, oil executives. They live with a civic wound that's been festering for twenty-five years, a newspaper whose unflattering nickname has become so ingrained in the state lexicon that from Muskogee to Guymon hardly a literate soul doesn't know of "The Daily Disappointment."

What other major newspaper in a metro area of one million people, and with a newsroom of 145 full-time reporters and editors, has only three African-Americans on its news staff?

Where else can you find a big-city editorial page -- run by a Christian Coalition devotee plucked from Washington D.C.'s right-wing Free Congress Foundation -- that not only demonizes unions, environmentalists, feminists, Planned Parenthood, and public education, but also seems obsessed with lecturing gays? From an Oklahoman editorial titled, Sin No More: "There's no solid proof that anyone is born a homosexual . . . . Homosexuality is a sin . . . . But to deny that a sin is a sin and wallow in it is the first step toward damnation. To recognize bad behavior as a sin, repent of it and go and sin no more' is the first step toward salvation."
I'll admit that Talibamans, with Supreme Judge Roy's shredding of the Bill of Rights, may feel they have a claim on the not-so-illustrious title, but the Sooner state reigns as the current King.

At least so I say. Oklahoma is THE Buckle of the Bible Belt, capitol of brain-dead, fundy ignorance and goose-stepping Moral Majority fascist oppressors. Just to ice the cake, we're also situated properly geographically and even look like a big beltbuckle on a map!!

We are THE CHAMPIONS!!

And I'm prepared to defend our title against any pretenders who think they can take the crown.

I'll agree to Oklahoma, as long as you'll take Dallas.

We'll take Dallas if you take Oklahoma City. Deal?

Isn't it ironic that Democrat state legislators from Texas have actually fled to Oklahoma to escape Tom Delay's crusade.

Fortunately, by a fluke, we have now have a Democrat governor in OK. We were supposed to get Steve Largent, but another fundy idiot even further to the right than him split the vote and we got Brad Henry.

Without that bit of luck all those fugitive politicians would probably now be chained together and forced-marched all the way back to Austin.

BTW, I think Delay could give Inhofe a run for his money in the competition for Most Stupid - but Inhofe's rank as US Senator gives him an edge, though Delay may actually wield more power in the Repub party.

So far, spotty. We just had a vote on including a disclaimer in our science books that stated that evolution is only a theory and not accepted scientific fact (or something, I don't have the exact words at hand).

Amazingly enough, it lost ... by one vote. The fundy-dominated media is on the warpath about it though, so it will probably come up again .. and again .. and again. :banghead:

The fascist media-machine is totally geared up here to destroy our Democrat governor, though. They have been on a non-stop smear campaign since the first day he took office. They call him "Saddam" Henry. Why I could not tell you (except that he's not a neo-con Republican).

A local eatery had a sign up this morning that said something along the lines of "Texas Democratic representatives flee to Oklahoma - IQs of both states go down!"

Thumbs up Hey, BibleBelted!

We ought to organize a Daily Oklahoman bonfire! And throw some TV9 bumper stickers on top.

At times I get so frustrated I just want to pack it up an move to Vancouver.

To think that I moved back here from Dallas... Oy. I moved to a fundy little town (Blanchard) to get away from Dallas!

hehehehe

(North Dallas sucks)
