The most pathetic and unimaginative use of divine powers I have ever seen, but otherwise it was a reasonably entertaining movie.

I just saw this movie and am giving it a thumd up.
It was really entertaining with a lot of good gags. There's not much of an advanced storyline, but it's worth the price of admission for the jokes. Jim Carrey basically did nothing with his divine power and God himself wasn't much better. The general moral was that it's tough being God and you couldn't do much better, so stop complaining. There was one particularly pathetic scene where God asks Bruce what hew really wants and Bruce says world peace, but God gets him to backtrack and go on to some soppy crap his girl. There really wasn't much indication of why we should worship this absent minded deity other than the fact that he's much more powerful and can crush us with a thought; but that's Christianity for you. If you want a cheap laugh, go see it. Don't expect much in the way of metaphysical insight from it, though. |

I just saw the film, and, for what it's worth, it was entertaining. Most importantly, it was funny. As long as you don't take it too seriously, it's a fun movie.
My favorite quote: Bruce: Doesn't God ever take a break? God: Ever heard of the Middle Ages? |

I just heard a friend say that some Christians were upset at seeing God portrayed as a black man, but when I tried to search for a story on it, I found Landover Baptist: "Universal Studios Pays Jim Carrey $20 Million to Squat Down and Poop on the Holy Bible"
But the Christian Science Monitor describes the film as "secular". |

You know, there are one or two black Christians in the world.
In this thread, you guys are the ones who seem to think Christian = White. |

Rabid insane fundamentalist = white Most of us could care less about Christians that tend to their religion and leave others alone. The fundy Talibots are the ones we rail against. The vast majority of those are white, for whatever reason. |

Of course there are plenty of black Christians, but - in my perception at least - white racists and bigots seem to often identify as Christians. I know people (like my dad) that would be offended at anything that portrays God as a black guy. Hell, they're offended at anything that portrays a black person in any kind of role they see as positive.
Seeing Morgan Freeman cast as God makes me think, "heh, that's gonna piss somebody off." It won't make the news, because those kind of sentiments usually only get expressed in private nowadays (unless you're at a birthday party for Strom Thurmond). I saw plenty of it growing up. |
