Pointers aren't a simple thing, but they don't seem THAT difficult.

They're an extra layer of abstraction, sort of like what variables are to numbers. Some people have a limit in how abstract they can think. Pointers are it for many. It probably never stops--there's always one more layer of abstraction above you. Heck, I'm still clearing the abstraction hurdles required for doing math (differential geometry, Lie algebras) that would make most math blockheads scream with fright.

Well, pointers really aren't difficult if you understand the hardware operations involved. I guess if you rush into programming without knowing anything about hardware it could get messy.
