They're not <a href="http://www.stainblue.com/cubensis.html" target="_blank">Psilocybe cubensis,</a> are they?

I only saw a mushroom ring once in my life. It was while I was taking microbiology in college. Someone called in a bomb threat and the rest of the school got to leave. Everyone but my hyperactive professor who had us all out sitting on a lawn listening to his lecture and taking notes.

Good grief, the nutty professor jumped up and down with glee when he saw that Fairy Ring... it was rather interesting though.

Naw, Patrick, P. cubensis grows almost exclusively on cow patties. There is a most astounding article in The Saturday Evening Post in May (or maybe April?) 1957 which describes a 'shroom induced out-of-body flight over the mountains of Mexico - the bruja ate six pairs of P. c. and gave the anglos one pair each, IIRC. And it was perfectly respectable back then, as we hippies-to-be were still in elementary school.
The article is well worth digging up, and with your well-proven library skills, should be easily dug.

Heh, my brudda-in-law swears by magic mushies (or "blue meanies" from the feint blue ring around their neck). Although a pillar of society today, during his experimentation phase he & his brothers were convinced all humanity’s angst could be cured by just one good mushroom trip.

But to the best of my knowledge magic mushies don’t grow in rings, they’re actually fairly solitary fungi & picking a crop takes a some time.

A long time ago (mid '70's) I was in an ER getting stitches when an ambulance brought in a guy who had OD'd on "magic mushrooms." It wasn't a pretty sight.

Although I havent seen the Post article, I believe I have heard the story. One of the anglos in question is Albert Hoffman, the swiss chemist who first synthesized psilocybin in the lab (and the accidental discoverer of LSD). He tells the story in his book LSD: My Problem Child. I read that book along with Aldous Huxley's The Doors or Perception when I was about 15, for a school paper. My teachers thought I was a bit eccentric . . .

I believed that too, about 10 years ago.
