Does this mean that if humans develop a sufficient technology, they suddenly become God?

What if someone came down and demonstrated those attributes and claimed to be Allah? Or better yet, Satan? Would you still believe it was God?

Would you only allow your God the error of a name change (Jehovah to blue orbital rhino) if it has no current mythological significance in your mind?

Exactly who is the idiot here SOMMS?

If I come to your house tonight and leave $20 under your pillow, will you believe that I'm the Tooth Fairy? What would it take?

Define the term in such a way it can't exist!
Brilliant! There is no limit to how low the skeptical intellect will grovel to protect it's way of life.
Ah yes, I just pulled that definition of miracle right out of my ass. How low can one go.

I can't believe you can still remain an atheist after reading such tripe. You have far more faith than I'll EVER have.
After reading your comments, I can definitely believe you're a theist.

I would certainly believe something extremely surprising happened. But I would try to understand it, not immediately go out and get a lobotomy like yours.

This is what most atheists (not necessarily you) are LOATH to admit. Because it makes them agnostics. It makes them admit either they aren't sure.
When did I ever say I was certain about anything...

PS-My main objection to your (skepticm's) definition of miracle is that it simply does not account for the seat-of-the-pants, wow factor.
I suspect I am less easily amused by shiny objects than you are.

If something completely bizarre happens you, DARN IT you shouldn't be suprise because you simply don't 'know the laws of nature'.
Huh? You are lapsing into incoherence here (although you apparently didn't have very far to go).

Awesome! That was just what I was thinking! What is SOMMS and Meatcock were the same people the whole time?

Wonderful job. I can't believe how much alike (and how childishly!) these theists act when angered.

How absurd. Even assuming for the sake of argument that no naturalistic explanation could be found, how do you make the leap that God did it? Proof of the supernatural does not equal proof of God. Legends and folk tales are full of people coming back from the grave. Asclepius was even said to be able to raise the dead. Beyond that, how can you show it was even YOUR god and not some other that did the deed?

What a coincidence! Just last week my dad died of a heart attack. He was pronounced dead by medical professionals. Shortly afterwards he was swept off to the cemetary and remainded entombed for several days.

Then...a great miracle occured! The Invisible Pink Unicorn brought my loving father back to life in full form!

You better start believing in the Invisible Pink Unicorn.

If you don't you're an idiot.

I have to say that after reading a few posts by SOMMS, I really miss people like Nomad. At least they posted logical arguments - not maniacal laughter and pointless propositions.

Forumers,

I recently had the pleasure of reading wordsmyths 'what it would take' post.

In it wordsmyth said that if some guy showed up today and performed miracles according to
these criteria:
1-context
2-repetition
3-results
4-publicity & documentation

that he would believe in God.

Here's the rub. What if this already happened 2000 years ago?

Now wordsmyth says he is looking for live video feeds and digital media...but it should come
as no suprise that people didn't have access to this technology back then. In fact, the
news media wasn't even invented yet.

He says he is looking for documentation...but there is no ancient text in mankinds history
that is more supported than the New Testament.

He says he is looking for publicity...yet no single event in the history of mankind has so
thoroughly affected the world. There are currently over 2 billion people who claim to
be Christians on the planet today. Heck, Jesus is even in your watch.

So here's my question:
What event would had to have happened 2000 years ago to convince you of God's presence?

Satan Oscillate My Metallic Sonatas

Let's face it, 2000 years ago people were not very smart, they just never got to develop the critical thinking skills we get a shot at today and they didn't have the information to justify using their minds instead of following blindly to every talented sooth sayer that came along. I guess if I were alive 2000 years ago I'd be one of the people, so it would more than likely take some guy pulling a rabbit out of his hat and saying it was the easter bunny from heaven, then I'd believe.

If you mean what would it take for me to believe today, as in what could have happened over 2000 years ago to make me believe in the modern age, well there are allot of things. A floating object of some kind, a show of some gods magical powers every once and awhile like in the PC game Black and White, or even a consistent world wide religion that had no separate denominations and believed in the exact same god without any glaring inconsistencies or faults. Maybe we'd all believe if we were born with perfect knowledge of some god that actually did exist, we'd still have free choice we'd just know what choice we were making.

Well, seeing as all gods are equally false, including the christian gods, then it's only good for a laugh to say what it would take.

I agree. An infinite and all powerful God could come up with an infinite number of ways to prove himself to us.

What do we get instead? 2000 year old, second-hand, fairy-tale bullshit and people who believe by faith but pretend to be logically sound in their inherited belief system.

brought a dead person back to life,
got shot and was proclaimed dead, but then came back to life him/her self,

you still would not believe in God?

Is that right?

Well, I'd be convinced, but of course this person would actually have to do these things and not just be said to have done them by a cult of loony pretend cannibals eating crackers and drinking red wine getting all goofy off their own biological opiates and neuropeptides, obsessed with death and selfishly awaiting a happy afterlife while childishly fearing a bad afterlife, worshipping the image of some guy with his arms and legs broken nailed to a piece of wood while screaming "I'm going to heaven and you're going to hell because you're not a loony pretend cannibal eating crackers and drinking red wine getting all goofy off their own biological opiates and neuropeptides, obsessed with death and selfishly awaiting a happy afterlife while childishly fearing a bad afterlife, worshipping the image of some guy with his arms and legs broken nailed to a piece of wood!" while cheering "God did it! God did it! Rah Rah Rah!" and waving plastic fetuses outside abortion clinics because they think undeveloped and unaware groups of cells think and have souls before they even start to learn and fail to understand the first thing about quantum physics and denying science fighting new discoveries and theories that have already been proven time and time again because they just don't want to call them fact and condemning homosexuals in every way possible while being just as "sinful" as any non-believer and living by double standards as they always do and (sigh I could go on all night, good night).
