So, I'll take this special occasion to express my special relationship with Christ...
I was born 32 years ago on Palm Sunday. Although, I did not realize the significance at the time, this early spring birthday set the stage for Christ and me to get off on the wrong foot. Some of the first memories I have are of my birthday spent alone because all my friends were spending Easter with their families rather than spending it with me on my birthday. And then there is the stigma of the Easter Bunny. The proximity to Easter makes the Easter Bunny a convenient theme. I mean think of the Easter left-overs that go on sale after Easter but can now be reused for my birthday. It's just humiliating. Anyway, the whole thing with bunnies, eggs, and the lunar calculation of Easter reminds me that the Catholic Church did a billiant job repurposing pagan holidays. Then Hallmark took that cue and pushed it up a notch. So if there were ever a Scrooge for Easter, it would be me. |
