Hmm. As much as I agree with the spirit of indie rock, most indie bands I've heard (on several college radio stations) have been marginally talented and uninspired. I've found several groups (mostly hardcore and metal) that are relatively unknown and that I like (Candiria, Dillinger Escape Plan, Tomahawk, Meshuggah, Coalesce, Refused) but the more melodic stuff is harder to come across. Maybe I'm just lazy.

Ever try Converge, WastedPotential? A lot of kids worship that band.

I like the rock music from the 60's, 70's, and 80's, and then the 90's sucked (except for techno).

I think it's just part of the aging process. We tend to like most what we hear around the ages of 14-24 or so.

I'm in complete agreement, Wasted. I went through my teenage years to all the stuff you mentioned, and I when I look at the pretentious, bland garbage that passes as "alternative" rock these days, I find it really isn't a case of looking at the past through rose-colored glasses - the 90's grunge stuff really was better than Nickelback, Default, Foo Fighters (yecch), Puddle of Mudd, et cetera. These guys seem to be making a sad attempt at copying the genuine angst of Soundgarden, Alice in Chains etc. But maybe I am just gettin' old

My all-time favorite band (or rather, artist, technically speaking) to this day is Trent Reznor/Nine Inch Nails. I love pretty much all of his music, and I admire Reznor himself as a true artist - he seems to do what he does out of love of the craft, and doesn't particularly give a shit if anyone likes it or not.

Of course, I'm not here to start a flame-war; it's all a matter of personal bias and preference. I HATE anything with any kind of upbeat or mindlessly happy tune, which these days is just about everything out there. Pop-punk (Blink 182, Sum 41) is something I find actually has a physical effect on me - it makes my teeth grind, like someone's running their nails across a chalkboard. And that goddam Puddle of Mudd song where he squeals like a stuck pig about how he "met a girl and thought she was grand" makes the experience of having your ears sewn shut seem almost a blessing, and ...

Stop relying on radio stations and record labels to tell you what's good music. Go out and do some legwork and you'll be amazed at what you can find. Here's a few casual suggestions to get you started...

Dredg
Tool
Radiohead
Modest Mouse
30 seconds to Mars
Meshuggah
36 crazyfists
Pulse Ultra
Placebo
The Used
Tori Amos
Bjork
Reverend Horton Heat

Go out and see for yourself...Good rock music is still out there, but you have to seriously search for it.

Blasphemy, Superunknown is one of my favorite albums. They're one of the few bands I got into as a pre-teen but haven't grown out of -- Chris Cornell's voice and lyrics still impress the shit out of me to this day. Soundgarden IMO tended to be more metal than grunge anyway. (not that it makes a huge difference in whether they're good or not, but...)

I can agree to AiC and Pearl Jam though... both had some great songs (Man in the Box and the Ten album respectively) but I don't think either really lived up to their potential.
