I lucid dream frequently, and always have control of the dream when I'm lucid dreaming. It comes naturally to me, in that I have never tried to train myself to do it. I have a lot of dreams where I fly. I also usually dream in colour; I thought it was extremely weird when I discovered that some people don't. (I can only remember one time that I have dreamed in b&w.) A lot of my dreams have people I know in the background, not actually doing anything, just hanging around.
When I dream about sex, I'm usually (not always) aware that I'm dreaming, but either don't have control of what happens or get so involved in it that I don't think about controlling it.
I haven't had a nightmare for years, which I'm extremely grateful for. I used to have terrible nightmares when I was younger.
I think it's fairly obvious where some dreams come from. Eg, a few weeks ago I dreamt I was arguing with Tony Blair and he was refusing to listen to me. Given how I feel about the war in Iraq, it was pretty easy to work out where that one came from. But I don't think there's anything special about dreams; they are images generated in our brains, not paths to other planes of existence.

I once had an interest in lucid dreaming when I was in college. I bought a book on how to do it but never really had the patience to go through all the excercises to get it going.

I did manage to have one short one, though. I dreamt I was at a party and at some point realized, "Hey, this is a dream". I immediately tried to make this girl I liked be sitting next to me and suddenly she was. That success shocked me so much that I woke up. I've never been able to do it again.

Lucid dreaming can be really adrenaline-pumping for me, too--I wake up and I'm sweating and my heart is pounding. My dreams often seem really, really realistic, and having a really bad one (although those don't happen more than once or twice a year) can upset me for days.

I haven't read the responses so far but from my experience lucid dreaming is not only possible but I do it all the time!

To me lucid dreaming is like standing back and watching yourself dreaming, I will set up my dreams as I fall asleep and remain in control of them when they occur.

I do this as a response to horrible nightmares that occured when I was young and I can honestly say I haven't had a nightmare since I was about 10 years old.
