Emotions, of which the main emotion responsible for what would traditionally called "moral" behavior would probably be empathy.

christian scriptures may be viewed as anathema to freedom, or they may be viewed as cultural concepts of socialisation by which people may be prevented from damaging the lives of others or themselves.

I was brought up to do the Right Thing (capitals required), even Under Adversity.
The Right Thing depends very much on the situation. Fortunately, I was also brought up being taught how to use to mind to attempt to understand the situation, and determine what the Right Thing would be. The Right Thing, is usually the one that results in the least amount of suffering - this can carry through past the y-axis, and become whatever results in the greatest amount of joy. This, and "Those who deny another their rights, by that action forfeit the protection of theirs." Which I gues would be similar to the non-backwards Golden Rule. |

I have yet to flesh out this specifics of it, but my personal code runs along the lines of progression - of society, technology and the ego. To cast aside my 'needs' (read: wants) and insecurities is not always possible, but I do like to think it sets an example for others to follow (or be inspired by) in sort of golden rule sort of way.

My moral code is clearly defined. I lie and like to be prejudiced (especially against the young).

I lean to agree with Copernicus. Empathy. The principle of not doing onto others what you do not wish to be done onto you. Added to doing for others what you wish could have been done for you.

Rational self-interest.
I try to be as happy as possible without lying to others and specially to myself. |
