Dad's never been stronger in faith than a deist since I've been alive, so religion was never stressed in my family. I remember going to church with my grandparents thinking "They know its just a story, right?"

I tried to be a Christian right around my freshman year in highschool--but found myself forcing myself to believe in god. So I dropped it, and admitted my full fledged atheism.

do we know someone who went from strong atheism (not "oh, i'm not sure" agnosticism, but strong "you've got to be kidding" atheism) to theism? i'd be interested to find out, as i find it easy to imagine someone going from theism to atheism, but not atheism to theism. i'm sure it happens (ok, i know it happens), but i find it harder to imagine.

Theologically accredited?!? Is that anything like astrologically accredited or alchemically accredited?

In this post i'm responding to a variety of comments stated in various posts.

So, Im asking for general opinions- do the views etc of ex-theists carry more weight than those of life-long atheists?
Well, as Heathen Dawn stated below, ex-theists can offer first-hand experienced knowledge as to what theists believe and why they believe it. Well...if not all, some knowledge, then.

Heathen Dawn:

It offers insight into what makes theists tick. You develop immunity that way, and you're better equipped to deconvert them.
Well, I agree, it offers insight on "what makes theists tick", but as far as "deconvert"-ing them, I very much disagree. It reverts back to the golden rule. (Treat people as you want to be treated) Would you want some theist knocking on your door trying to convert you? Or would you even want any theist attempting to convert you at all?

I have been an atheist all my life, which means that i cannot comprehend how you could believe in something with no evidence, i simply canot fathom it. I think having that experience provides you with insight into how others thing, which is a valuable thing.

Well, I wouldn't say being an atheist all your life would mean you cannot comprehend how they believe what they believe. I too am a "lifelong" atheist and I can understand perfectly fine how they are so gullible in their beliefs. Most of it is ignorance, illogic, and fear. Well, i'd say I have somewhat of a upperhand(?) than you do. I willingly take active part in a church. Lately though, I haven't been going to it because the people have started to annoy me greatly, so now, i'm moving from church to church (my friends' churches that is) and asking each pastor questions. Sort of like an interview, I suppose.

I don't often admit my "age" (even though I don't concider myself that young) when in discussion with theists, as they usually brush it off as; "a childish rebellion", "just a phase", or "you'll know better when you're older" etc. Though I am pleased to note that when they do have to guess my age- they usually guess 40-50... on average. I must be mature for my age...

Haha, we seem to have something in common. When my age has been mentioned they usually say things like "When you have your own family, car, house, and pay taxes, we'll talk then." It does become quite a bother. Now, I usually just state "Age is irrelevant when it comes to knowledge. Ever heard of child genuises?".

Heh, a guess of 40-50? I usually get 25-35. I've been told i'm mature. Not all the time though. For me, I guess it just depends on if i'm with my friends or not.

found a question i missed earlier:

Please give us some examples of what was so hard for you to accept?
hmm... let me see:

week long creation
global flood
virgin birth
water into wine etc (what a waste of omni potence)
resurrection

and many others.

lets face it- the idea that a god came down from heaven, impregnated some lass who went on to give birth to a deity which was a thrid of the deity that impregnated her (my head hurts already), who then went on to perform various petty miracles throughout his life before being crucified, and rising from the dead 3 days later and buggering off to heaven to live happily ever after. that story is hard to swallow. period.
