I would second some of the previously mentioned persons:
Buddha Boenhoffer and Niemoller Albert Schweizter I'd add Joseph Priestley. Best known as an amateur chemist for discovering oxygen and carbon dioxide he was a leading religious freethinker and pastor of a liberal, heterodox church. Any cleric who could write a book entitled "A History of the Corruptions of the Christian Church" deserves a hearing. He was an influence on Thomas Jefferson's religious skepticism, and, in a famous letter to TJ he referred to the doctrine of the trinity as "metaphysical insanity." And re. Origen. Isn't this the dude that castrated himself? That would certainly make me a bit skeptical. |

Besides, I'm guessing that bocajeff was referring to the Satan of the bible, not an actual being. Since he only exists as a literary character, he can't really try and influence actual people. Quote:

Zoroaster was a real person, the founder of Zoroastrianism which was the original religion of Iraq. Now they are called Parsis. Zoroaster called God "Ahura Mazda".
The word "Zarathustra" is used by Nietsche and RIchard Strauss as part of their superman philosophy, in German. Read about their history, they are a real religion and probably the oldest one that is still around. Zoroaster rebelled against Mithra. |
